Okay. If your job is like mine, you have to teach content through using technology! Lucky us! Now, lets brainstorm some cool projects we can do that incorporate the latest technololgy while teaching core subject material (math, reading, social studies, science).
I am the owner of 4vision, Inc., a 20-year-old software R&D company. Over the past two years we have developed a distributed, digital media network platform called the Nomad Storyteller platform.
Nomad enables end users to act as digital media consumers and producers of multimedia content that can be shared across a network of Nomad users. Users are provided personal workspaces called "digital portfolios", that are hosted on their own devices (desktop, laptop, mobile), or third party storage services. Digital portfolios are used to manage the creation of multimedia content and individual personal content.
An easy to use content editor, and narrative based templates, enables the user to create multimedia content in the form of stories and narratives. Seamlessly integrated communications services such as Instant Messaging, Voice Over IP, peer-to-peer collaboration and streaming services provide users many ways to share stories.
A key feature of the product is the integrated social network connector that enables the Nomad platform to connect Nomad digital portfolios across social networks based on users like interests. Facebook and Ning are our initial social network integration targets. Facebook boasts over 30 million users providing immediate potential users of our services as a result of Nomad's seamless integration with Facebook user profiles.
I believe Nomad would be a great tool for schools to use as a distributed personal learning and knowledge management system. Stories are user created, searchable and sharable across of distributed network which expands via seamlessly connections to other social networks. User content is automatically semantically organized to create personal story ontology's that are aggregated based on a range of attributes such as user profiles, likes, studies. In Nomad the concept of school and learning is personalized digital stories that span the life long and life wide journey.
Use case studies in TELS, located at http://wise.berkeley.edu/. This was funded by National Science Foundation (NSF) and many universities around the country.
Create a free account and then log in and check out the projects. You can use one or all teh projects with your classes and most are based on National Standards. I have used this for the last three years with my biology classes and they have enjoyed it and learned too.
This is a FREE tool for incorporating Current Events into your classroom: www.seedebate.org
It's a non-profit organization that is run by an amazing social studies teacher (who is a Classroom 2.0 user: Meghan Connelly) and me. It's not just blogging. It's not just wiki. It's not just material for you to print out. It ISdynamic, fun, interactive and bridge-building.
We provide current events content in the form of news articles, discussion ideas and background web references. We also provide a safe, respectful and engaging web space for your students to discuss current events with all the other students at SEEdebate.
Social Studies, Language Arts, English, Economics, reading and Forensics classes are all at SEEdebate, with science starting up soon. 39 States and 9 countries are represented. We welcome more participants and will help you get started.
Take a look and reply to me here or at my Classroom 2.0 space. Tell me what you think!
We just launched www.StudentsKnow.com the first social network student-2-student learning site with rich video content. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts - paul@studentsknow.com. Thanks!
