Mobilizing the talent of student and workplace volunteers

I encourage you to visit the Tutor/Mentor Blog and view a flash presentation created by two student interns from Korea who are working in my Chicago non profit this month. The presentation shows some of the participants in the Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference, held on May 29 and 30. It also has a map showing where locations of organizations who participated in the conference, and shows web addresses for some of the people who did workshops or were on panels.

I could not have created such a presentation myself, nor could anyone else on my staff. By recruiting students and encouraging them to use their talent we have an advertising and public awareness tool that can help us draw more volunteers and donors to tutor/mentor programs in Chicago.

Imagine if students from high schools and colleges all over the country were doing these type of presentations to connect their parents, friends, neighbors, etc. with non profits working with causes in poverty areas, or in disaster areas of the world. They would be providing a service that enhances the capacity of thousands of organizations who cannot do this work for themselves.

The National Conference on Volunteering and Service is taking place in San Francisco this week. This year they are attempting to use social media to connect with people not able to be at the conference. I wrote about this on my blog and I'm connected to them on Twitter.

I wonder how many of those teaching students to use technology in learning are also teaching them to use it to mobilize and lead people in service? Can you share your thoughts or web pages?
