Suzie Boss replied to Suzie Boss's discussion 'Welcome, New Members' in the group PBL ~ Better with Practice
Hi Terrie, Welcome to the group! It sound like you have an excellent problem ahead. I'm guessing that you'll be able to use projects to deepen students' understanding of the math they've been learning in your flipped classroom.…

Hi all!  I am Terrie and I teach third grade in Michigan.  I am interested in project based learning because, as I explore some flipping of the classroom, I am discovering that some students could be done with their math by January. …

Hi Marsha, I appreciate your concerns. You might find some inspiration in the advice offered by the National Association of School Psychologists. They encourage activities that build youth resilience, so that students “see themselves as a…

I'm very torn about what to do.  I don't want to re-traumatize my students over the whole thing but it's such a big moment in our country's history....my students would have been 2 years old when it happened.  They…

How are you planning to observe the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with your students?I've collected some project-worthy resources in this Edutopia post. You'll find suggestions for helping students gather oral histories, make tributes, or be more critical consumers of the news, among other ideas.Pam Moran and Ira Socol share a powerful essay about why students need to learn to interpret…See More

About Me
I'm co-author of Reinventing Project-Based Learning: Your Field Guide to Real-World Projects in the Digital Age (published by ISTE). Co-author Jane Krauss and I take a worldwide look at how Web 2.0 tools are reinvigorating the project approach. I contribute frequently to Edutopia and the Stanford Social Innovation Review.
When I'm not writing about education, I develop programs that teach people (from youth to adults) how to be problem-solvers in their own communities. I recently joined the National Faculty of the Buck Institute for Education.

See You at ISTE?

ISTE's just around the corner, and I'm looking forward to facilitating a session on "Ripped from the Headlines Projects." It's Wed., June 29, at 11:45 a.m., and I'm happy to have two teachers and a media guest joining me. Please join us if you're interested in PBL, media literacy, or collaborating with colleagues on project planning. We'll have a wiki where teachers can connect and start planning their own ripped-from-the-headlines projects.

Should be fun!

Thanks Suzie! Our school is trying to move toward a more project based learning environment and I love to share good resources with my teachers whenever I can. I've invited them to join the group as well.

Thanks for your comment! I can't tell you how overwhelmed it is, just beginning PBL. I feel like I am barely treading water... but will definately start contributing to the discussions. Any advice for a PBL novice?

Thank you for the welcome, Suzie. I am new to the site but have already learned a great deal by listening to a few of the archived webinars. I'm looking forward to participating in the discussions in the future. Thanks for sharing your expertise in such a positive and encouraging way. I am leading a PLC that next year will be embarking on an effort to be more project-based in our approach to learning/teaching and look forward to continuing my own learning over the summer in preparation for a terrific year!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I was just offered a classroom today that will allow me to go back to project based learning.
I can't wait to start school next year with that prospect in mind.
