"Christy, well said. Here's another thought I had after I logged off last night. It has a lot more to do with being a good digital citizen than it does with 'getting caught' or 'getting in trouble'. It has to do with…"

"Dee, you're thinking of "fair use" guidelines. There are 4 criteria for Fair Use, of which you mentioned 2. You also need to take into account the nature of the original work (artistic work is protected more than factual work) and how…"

"HI Kim, I am also confused as to what is actually "copyright free". From what I have been reading, it is copyright free as long as it is used in an educational setting and not re-posted to the web. Do you know if the sites you have…"

"Actually, yes, a public domain piece performed by an artist who releases the recording under Creative Commons would be OK (as long as you meet the terms of whatever Creative Commons license it is). The Library of Congress does have some of the old…"

"So a classical piece performed by a creative commons artist should be OK? haha! You could also go to the Library of Congress and search for music audio and find the original recording!!"

"It's not straightforward. If you find recordings from the US Marine Band or US Air Force Band, those recordings are in the public domain (produced by the government & paid for by taxes = public domain). So, if the music itself is old enough…"

Hi Scott!

Happy New Year! I was wondering if you, your educator contacts or students would be interested in participating in a nationwide Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. We'd really like to get more students involved from NJ!

You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!

You're so good! I'm jealous about your workshop. Who sponsors it? Let me know what you learn if you can find a minute.
Things are really good here. I love the work, but I'm so swamped this first semester -- you know, every little thing is new and a bit overwhelming.
I have freshmen who are at-risk academically (EDR100: College Reading), juniors doing their first field experience (EDR312: Reading instruction and practicum), and masters level reading students (EDR516: Problems in Literacy Development). Next semester I will keep 2 of those and take on 1 new course. Then, beginning this summer and into next year, I'll have just the 312 and two masters level courses. It's challenging, but I'm loving it.

The I'm loving it part is especially true when I visit the old website and see pictures of our (pardon me, your) new administrators. But I remember what you said: They will not win.

So have you had time to meet with the small professional learning group you were forming last year, or is it too soon for that?

And how is Heather?

Thank you sooooooo much for keeping in touch. I don't deserve it because I'm a terrible communicator; nonetheless, I appreciate it.

Thanks for thinking of me. My first classes at WCU are tomorrow. Exciting times!
I'll have to catch up on the "nightmare" news. Last I heard, the district had hired two female VP's. I wondered about a certain male.
You'll be fine because, remember: they cannot get you down; they cannot win. I believe your small professional learning group can do great things, and I hope you'll consider including Ciccotta and Quinn. They are both outstanding.
I'll be in touch.
Carol
