Mike O'Hara replied to Nancy Bosch's discussion To Twit or not to Twit
"For those of you who are still not sure about Twitter, it might be because of the frame of mind you have going into it. It's not a means to a given end, it's a means to something you haven't thought of. I think the best way to…"

Mike O'Hara replied to charles herzog's discussion Operating Systems: How Painful To Switch?
"Years of PD? No. I switched from Windows to Ubuntu. As you know, they are very similar. For people really slow with technology, they might need an afternoon to have someone walk them through the new os. But really, what are they going to use besides…"

Mike O'Hara replied to Kathy Cercone's discussion Research on RSS and use in education (or any research)
"RSS feeds are really only a time saver. You use them so you don't have to constantly check outlets (news sites, blogs, wiki's social networks, pod casts etc.) for new material. Here is what Yahoo says on it. So do with that what you…"

Mike O'Hara replied to Nancy Bosch's discussion To Twit or not to Twit
"The fascinating thing I find about Twitter is the "Blank Canvas" effect it has on people (I'm sure most of you teachers have run into this at some point in your classroom). Imagine you're an art teacher. You bring in 50 lbs of…"

Mike O'Hara replied to Anne Pemberton's discussion Is Creative Commons legit?
"The problem was, the student who found the Sally Hemings material was in the 4th grade. The teacher wanted the students to get information on Thomas Jefferson that was more objective. i think most of us can agree that issues of presidents fathering…"

Mike O'Hara replied to Anne Pemberton's discussion Is Creative Commons legit?
"Well said Steve. This is a classic youth vs experience argument. On one side you have someone who has seen a lot attempts and failures (i personally remember my high school investing close to $6,000 in laser disk technology. Not a smart move). And…"

Mike O'Hara replied to Cristina Salvatierra Lowe's discussion Why are traditional classrooms slow to move towards open content curriculum and other technologies?
"Ahh, I see. From your lack of response it seems like you are not at liberty to discuss finer details. If there is any way I can help, please let me know."

Mike O'Hara replied to Cristina Salvatierra Lowe's discussion Why are traditional classrooms slow to move towards open content curriculum and other technologies?
"Christina, The reason why classrooms are slow to adapt technology is because of a lack of knowledge. Most educators have no idea what is out there (and I don't blame them for not knowing, there is an overwhelming amount of stuff and nobody to…"

Hi Mike, I lead a small non profit in Chicago that expands learning and social capital for inner city kids through non-school, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs. While I lead a single program, I've created the Tutor/Mentor Connection to help all of the programs in the city get resources they need, and to help fill voids in neighborhoods where there are no programs. A key resource is a Google map based Program Locator which anyone can use to find contact info for existing programs, or to build public/private collaborations to support programs.

The key question that I'd like to see more people asking is "what are all the things we need to do to help a youth born in poverty be starting a job/career by age 25?" Building participation in this question, and sustaining involvement for many years, are two of the first strategies that would need to be addressed.

I think that question is relevant for everyone on this list, but not many are asking it. It's also relevant for business and public leaders in Boston, Chicago and other cities, but few leaders are asking it and building communities of people involved in building sharing ideas and information that would lead to a distribution of programs leading to that result.

I was a history major in college so I think we might both approach this from the same perspective of "what do we already know" and "how can we share that"

I hope we can connect here or in other forums for this purpose.

Thanks Mike for the information and explanation. I have a gmail account, used google docs for a grad class with another teacher, have a wiki, blog, delicious account, and use moodle for my classes throughout the year. I have been taking grad classes to learn about the technology and how to use it. My biggest problem with implementing any of that is the school filter. all "social networking" sites are blocked. They unfiltered YouTube for a while-kids wouldn't get off of it. So back to filtering it. I would have thought Google docs would been a better choice. They are looking at Google Wave and thinking this might be something we could use. Don't know that much about it yet. Will check out what you said about that. My plan for summer is to try to plan and revise to implement as much as possible next year without burning out. I need summer to revive and rejuvinate. Tell me exactly what you do, how much it costs the district, and any other details that would be helpful for me to pass on. Thanks.
