My room is next door to the art room, where a brilliant teacher, Debbie Bernard, teaches art to Years 4, 5, and 6. You'll notice that most of the pictures are from last year, and the year before - purely a question of timetable - there were many more periods when she had a class and I didn't, when I could nip into her room with my camera and record what was going on. This year there are almost no periods like that - we both have classes at the same time, or are not on campus when the other is working!

That's the origin of the photos - I just thought her work was excellent, and worth recording. Having taken a zillion pictures, what do you do with them? Flickr is a great answer. Plus, we have nowhere else official to put them! Our school website is all behind a password.

The kids began to get interested in what we were doing, and now there are lots of questions and comments about "recording the process" - they do portfolios with their homeroom classes, and art notebooks with Debbie, but this is different for them - they can see their work as a whole class, and see it through someone else's eyes.

I had fun using those photos to Blog the art curriculum, too (although there is almost no writing, which we both regret - mostly a question of time) From Room 401: Art in the PYPas a one stop place the community could see what was going on, and as a place to showcase all the different ways I could find to include photos on a blog.

There has been talk about doing this "officially", and not just in the art room, and we've talked about producing little books on Blurb for each of the units - we may actually get around to that this spring!

We hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. More importantly, and unlike many of our competitors, our software will empower teachers to better integrate higher level thinking skills, teamwork, personalized learning, goal setting, reflection, effective feedback and evaluation, and the ability to work with groups across classes and schools to more effectively let students follow their interests and let teachers share their knowledge. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2009."

Note that winning this contest will raise $10,000, a large and useful sum of money for a web-based company running on “sweat equity” and minimal costs. We would love your support in the form of a vote, but more importantly we'd love your feedback and comments. Our description on Ideablob is short, and even the one above hardly gets at many of the issues we would like to take a stab at solving.
