About Me
I am the library director at Kent State University's Geauga Campus and a Professor of Library & Media Services. I teach English and educational technology courses and serve as a facilitator for a learning community that fosters development in web teaching and academic support services for online students and faculty. Most of my research is in emerging technologies and online assessment. Currently, I am doing research on social networking apps in education and teaching social media literacy.

Since my library is being renovated, I have the opportunity to spend more time doing actual research. I have a book chapter on teaching with social networks to work on for one project. I will be at the Teaching Professor conference in a few weeks and hope to meet some people there. I am thrilled that Merlot has a ning site now for additional access to resources.

Right now, I find myself on several campus wide commitees to select teaching tools for our faculty. I find the task rather… Continue

IOC Conference - Social Networking

Posted on January 31, 2008 at 1:30pm 0 Comments

Just finishing up my presentation for the IOC conference. If anyone else is planning to attend, stop by to say hello or let me know if you are presenting and I will visit your session etc.

I'm talking about why we should teach with social networking tools....

Also coming up is the TCC Online Conference as well...anyone planning to attend?

It's too bad we couldn't set up a classroom 2.0 lounge at all these conferences.

Hi Mary, I haven't had any problems with NIng and ADA compliance at all - I can work out an alternative if a problem comes up, but that hasn't come up. This semester, for example, I've got a student who is quadriplegic and she has had no trouble with using the Ning at all. She had some trouble with another piece of software I recommend for the students to use and had to find an alternative for that (students normally build their website with Mozilla Seamonkey, but this student found GoogleSites easier to use). We've got a good disabilities services office at my school and they always alert us students who have special needs, and I've found that teaching online it's so much easier to accommodate students this way than in the classroom setting.
P.S. I hardly ever participate in classroom2.0 these days but you can always reach me via my email, laura-gibbs@ou.edu or over at FiresideLearning.Ning.com. :-)
