"I'm glad that you like the quotes in the bathroom! I like reading the daily quotes in the newspaper. Several of Ben's teachers at Holy Spirit have daily quotes written on their chalkboards, and give extra credit for written reflections on…"

In School Turnarounds

Interesting Education Week article about the importance of relationships in students' lives.  But this article's thesis is somewhat misleading, because there is also corporate sponsorship and involvement with students.  Most interesting to me as a veteran teacher is that the school in question didn't replace any teachers, and still completely changed the culture and the academic progress of the school (paying attention, Governor?).  Everyone bought into what the principal was trying to do,…See More

"Chapt. 20: The federal government is not about to channel any of it's military money to education. Second, they are spending money on the educational equity of girls and women because the National Organization of Women protested loud and strong…"

Kathleen Zinski replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys: Chapters 17, 19, 20 in the group Somers Point Teachers
"Chapter 19: It totally seems that girls are being punished! What's so great about having higher male to female enrollment at the university level? If the boys don't make it, they'll learn to. Why were these schools coddling the boys…"

Kathleen Zinski replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys: Chapters 17, 19, 20 in the group Somers Point Teachers
"Chapt. 17 BTW, what happened to 18? If it's just the boys who need help, why did Octavius have a 14 year old girlfriend that got pregnant? Positive role models don't exist for many of our young women too, who will be accepted by their…"

Lisa Litz-Neavear replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys Chapter 15 Notes from the Front: Project Earthquake in the group Somers Point Teachers
"Yes, Diane, the middle school's mentoring program does seem to address many of our students' need for a positive connection with an adult at school. Unfortunately, I don't know how realistic it is for us to have a color-blind…"

"Beautifully-articulated, Kathy! You gave me an idea: let's share people's responses with the author! If no one has any objections, I'll do that. I agree that different teachers having different expectations can be especially…"

Kathleen Zinski replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys Chapter 16 Smart Boys Who Get Bad Grades in the group Somers Point Teachers
"At some point in time boys do need to write legibly, collaborate well in groups, and be organized. At what grade should this be an issue? Some expectations are legitimate and I don't think we should "look past poor work habits...to…"

Kathleen Zinski replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys Chapter 15 Notes from the Front: Project Earthquake in the group Somers Point Teachers
"I have no objections, but I'm sure many parents would. "Why do just the African American males get the pep talk?" They might also object to the technique, since it is an "in your face" confrontation. But why not show them…"

Kimberly O'Brien replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys Chapter 14 Single-Sex Schooling in the group Somers Point Teachers
"Kathy, I like that you're calling Peg to task on factoring out students' desire to learn. It seems the harder we try to get kids on board, the more they resist. There is a psychological aspect to turning your nose up to something that is…"

Diane Ennis replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys Chapter 14 Single-Sex Schooling in the group Somers Point Teachers

Kathleen Zinski replied to Lisa Litz-Neavear's discussion The Trouble With Boys Chapter 14 Single-Sex Schooling in the group Somers Point Teachers
