Online Professional Development

Our district is exploring being able to offer our teachers the ability to get professional development credit for online courses that they have participated in. Hours accepted at the district level then can go towards certification in NY.  We realize the benefits of online learning but have some questions.Does anyone out there have a procedure in place to accept online learning as professional development?Other questions:What types of online learning qualities for professional development?…See More

Dodie Ainslie replied to Harold Jeffcoat's discussion Tablets or Laptops...that's the question.
"I agree with some of the other replies here- it really has to come back to purpose.  What will your students be doing with the devices?  If it is a 1:1 schoolwide program this question may be hard to answer, or it might involve too many…"

Dodie Ainslie replied to cpstechcoach's discussion Live@edu vs. Google Apps for Education
"Thanks Derrick for this reply- great information. I have also felt that as educators we simply can't continue to pay the high price for Microsoft when there are alternatives that are free. We also are giving our students life long digital…"

Dodie Ainslie replied to Diana Hansen's discussion Can You Guess the Top 10 Digital Tools in Today’s Classroom?
"Interesting top 10- probably not so far off here in New York.  I have to say though I cringe when I see PowerPoint on the list. There are so many more presentation software/tools out there that I'd rather see students and teachers looking…"

Dodie Ainslie replied to Shamini Dias's discussion research on mentoring
"We have a formal 2 year mentor program at our district- new teachers attend a four day orientation/induction, then workshops throughout the year where we explore best practices, reflect, and network. I am one of the two teachers who have been…"

Dodie Ainslie replied to linda turrell's discussion wiki or blog?
"Depends on purpose- what is your goal, what specific learning do you want to see happen? Blogs offer a great venue for students to have digital discussions. Discussions on books would be great... Wikis offer a great collaboration venue where…"

Dodie Ainslie commented on Gayla Thompson's blog post Technology In The Classroom – An Investment Or A Waste of Resources?
"It all comes back to purpose, not simply how it looks. I get frustrated with this often- good teaching is good teaching and those who can effectively integrate new technologies do it well and motivate students to learn. If we 'blanket' our…"

Dodie Ainslie replied to Heather Davis's discussion File Conversion

Hi Dodie I really enjoyed reading your response to "What prompted you to start using web2.0" The fact that you went from the gadgets to the technology is one that many do not even think about. Like you, I am so connected as well and it can be an amazing thing! Thanks for sharing.
