I would say, that there could be no harm in teaching basic Java development at the high school level. It will prepare them for college and also help them enter the work force a lot earlier by showing they have knowledge and proficiency in Java. You…

I realize it's kind of too late now, but in case this could help someone else... Popular free Java development environments: * DrJava * JGrasp * BlueJ The industry-grade Eclipse is also free though more of a beast to deal with.

Brian, I've argued this point before here at CR 2.0 but most "digital natives' aren't. Teachers say they are intimidated by kids' 'skills' with computers--not so much! The skills kids have are low level, txting,…

Brian--whip up the instructions in a video game format and you'll have it made. I've had tons of students over the years who are addicted to video games--reading instructions, writing a paragraph or learning your times tables pales by…

Well, we are private and are not under the thumb of NCLB. Video games makes sense. Almost all of our students have iPods, Internet-accessible cell phones, and/or, PSP games at school. Those students who do have laptops use them almost exclusively…

My hypothesis is the video game culture, but I didn't want to say it. And I can't prove it, of course. (But I wouldn't be surprised if there was some research out there somewhere that has investigated this very phenomenon.) Let's…

I'll throw out two possible causes--video games and NCLB. I'll be glad to discuss further if any one takes the bait.

I totally agree with you. I don't know how many times a day I say read the instructions. Especially during dissection, the labs are totally independent. Everything they need is exlpained right there in the lab packet. In theory, I…

Hello Brian sir, Namaste. I'm Sushil, from Nepal. I'm glad to see you in this very outstanding site. I came to know that you're teaching technology. So, I'd like to know what sorts of technology you teach like computer-programming/web creation or other sorts of technology. The reason behind asking this is because; These days, I'm going to get started with a new website so as to let people know various issues of technology as well as to create awareness through website. Perhaps, you might suggest me, hope to hear from you soon.

Hey Brian,

Our Brainyflix video contest just ended, and I wanted to thank you for helping us get the word out. We got 800 submissions from across the country!

That said, MIT was really happy with the results and will let us run another contest, so we're going for it! But this time, we're gonna have kids create Brainypics flashcards - which are images and sentences paired up with a one of our SAT/ACT words. The contest ends May 22nd, and there'll be iTunes and a cash prize like last time. To boot, we'll double the payout if the kids can hit a certain goal. More details at brainyflix.com/main/contest_rules.

Do you mind passing my message along to students and your colleagues again?

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Brian!

Hope you're enjoying the winter break. I was wondering if you, your educator contacts or students would be interested in participating in a nationwide Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. We'd really like to get more students involved from Texas!

You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!

Hi Brian,

You can turn your doc into a power point then upload to authorstream or Wiziq. Your students then can view these lessons online any time. You can even embed inot your blog.
