I do it frequently. It works about like you'd expect, most kids know how to run their own stuff, some are as clueless as they would be in a lab. I find they are more comfortable using their own devices, so it goes smoother overall.
I have also…

I teach 9th grade in a small rural school. My feeling is that worksheets should be used sparingly and with guilt across the board. They accomplish little other than wasting time. I think technology is under-used in most English…
I have freshmen, but I think the greatest power you have is respect. You have to have a presence. The presence I always try to express in any group of kids is "hey, I am in charge, this is what we are going to do, and your…
"More than a blog" is actually pretty difficult to get to short of a full bodied CMS like Joomla or Drupal, and you can't use a free site for those, as far as I know.
I'd recommend wordpress.com and one of the magazine…
I am specifically looking for something that looks like it is made for this purpose. I'd love something with a newspaper-style interface, with several columns and some flexibility for layout. i will have approx 30 smaller essays (3-5 paragraphs) to display. I'm looking for more than a blog, simpler than Yola or Weebly. Google Docs has some templates that work, but they don't seem quite right. What have you used?See More
I'm not sure how large of a staff you have or how many items you are talking here, but wouldn't a Google Calendar work? It is accessible to everyone (if you set it up that way) and then you can make a calendar for each item or type…
You could also make it a public document on the web and give out the url as needed.
Using an app like Tinyurl you could even create standard urls for them such as www.tinyurl.com/classdoc1
That way people know what the url will be ahead of time,…
From teachingwithgoogledocs.blogspot.com:Sometimes as I write about what I am teaching my students in the highschool, it probably makes it seem as if that is a one-way street. Thetruth of the matter is that it is often a two-way conversation that isvery healthy. I thought I would write about a few of the things I havelearned from the students I teach:1. They neither know or care what web 2.0, cloud computing, or socialmedia are. These…See More

I am looking for a free site where I might send out text reminders to students who sign up for the service. I understand that I can Twitter or something like that, but I want to push messages straight to their phones and have the phones signal them. I want the ability to essentially text 30 kids by sending an email. Any ideas?See More
This is sort of a rant, but despite our forward-thinking staff trying new technology and trying new internet tools, the fact of the matter is that sometimes the computers themselves just don'tcooperate. I hate the smug looks I get from teachers who areanti-technology when I am working on something new and exciting and thecomputers are fussy and the internet is spotty. They seem to say:SEEEEEEEE! I never have that kind of problems with my McGuffey Readersand my dittos! So: Here's my all-time…See More
I teach Ninth Grade English, and a class for 12th grade called Global Technical Communication. I try to infuse as much technology as I can in my Global Tech class, lots of collaborating on Blogger and Google Docs, Wiki's, and I want to do more Skype sessions this year.

Would your Global Technical Communications class like to partner with the World Mind Network and their new Student Leaders program? It requires 1 hour a month from participating students, and gives them exposure to leaders in Economics, Science, Sustainability, and the Environment. It's a good thing to put on college apps and resumes. Contact us at worldmindnetwork@gmail.com.
With your interest in Technology and Online Collaboration, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.
Here’s a Public Class on Technology Integration you might be interested in.
Hi Anthony I have also concentrated on making global connections with my classes. There is a global project called flatclassroom projects and their projects are about to start up once the USA school year starts. These are fantastic and geared primarily towards the 15-17 year old students.
