Our school will be experimenting with several Android tablets as well as the iPad this summer in hopes of starting a pilot program at some point next school year.  Does anyone have any Apps, Ideas, or Advice they would like to share about using Android Tablets and/or iPads in the classroom?

My thought was that it would be a good way to get a conversation started quickly IN CLASS. If all students could see each others responses as they were posted then the teacher could use that to gauge their understanding and lead a much deeper conversation as a result.
Why not just have the conversation or write their responses on the board.  With 25 iPads in my room it is always a challenge to avoid using technology just for the sake of using technology.  I would suggest to all that technology is great but preparing to use it to the benefit of the student and the objectives does take some thought.  This is a great forum for that, and I would love to see someone come up with a lesson using Twitter but I think that is going to be tough.  I can create one, but in the end I think it would be counterproductive to good pedagogy. 

You definitely could.  However, using something like Twitter could embolden the quieter/less-likely-to-speak-up student.  It also allows others in the world potentially to join in the conversation.  Take this forum for example - I started it so that the teachers at Salem High School could share their thoughts about the tablets they are playing with.  We could have done that in-house.  But because we used this forum, we have had amazing ideas, suggestions, comments from educators across the country.  I would see a Twitter conversation as:

1. More fun in the kids' eyes

2. More inclusive 

3. Harder to not participate in

4. Harder for one person to dominate - we've all had classes like this

5. A great brainstorming/discussion starter technique - people can respond to other people's response

6. A way to connect what the class is doing with the rest of the world

 

I'd probably have the Twitter response be the Do Now/Bell Ringer activity that then led into the larger, deeper, and more traditional classroom discussion.

Give it a shot and let me know how it works.  I think all your ideas are good but from the perspective of management and value to the student, I am not convinced.  I have considered doing this type of stuff inside the forum in Moodle but it just keeps coming back as alot of time and management for very little payoff, in other words there is not much of a cost benefit in tweeting opposed to just setting up a forum where thier responses could be longer and still include multipe kids but with much deeper thought involved.  I like trying new stuff so I totally think you should do it if you think it can work. 

 

has anyone discovered a classroom response app for the ipad that's reliable and worth using?
Try QuestionPress - www.questionpress.com.  It is web-based - not an app - but works well.
You can also try socrative.com if you want a free option.

Does anyone out there have a list of procedures or practices they used when implementing a 1:1 tablet initiative?  

Rules for kids?  

Communications with parents/community?

Procedures for lost/broken/stolen tablets?

Thanks, Daryl.  That's a good way to look at it.
We (Salem City Schools, Salem, VA) would like to send a team of folks to visit a school or system that has instituted a 1:1 tablet initiative.  We'd prefer a school/system that started no later than the beginning of this school year.  Any ideas?
