I recently heard of a site called Moodle. Has anyone had any experience with this? I want to use it to have class discussions about literature, exchange comments and be able to monitor the discussions. Any comments or ideas on how to use Moodle would be helpful.

Tammy Moore is the person to contact about Moodle. She is a major user and has given many courses on using it. You can find her on this site.
Sally - I just started working with Moodle. I got to experiment with it during an online class about teaching online (UWStout - I highly recommend their program), and am now experimenting with it myself. To get some ideas, try Moodle 101, a custom search engine for teachers just learning about Moodle. I've started using Global Classroom to host my Moodle, since nobody else at my school is using Moodle - they have been very helpful. http://www.globalclassroom.us/

A GREAT book to help you understand how to set up classes, discussions, etc. in Moodle is Moodle 1.9 for Teaching 7-14 Year Olds by Mary Cooch. It takes you step by step through the whole process.

Thank you! This is very helpful.

I would check out YouTube as there are many videos on how to use Moodle in the classroom. This will also allow you to see if Moodle is what you need. Moodle is an open source Course Management System that does a lot more than handle discussions.

I would also start by checking out their website.
