November 8, 2007

After a very long Wednesday, I did not want to get up this morning. However, I knew today was very important because I had a new lesson and my observer was coming in today. I was feeling good when I left the house and I got to school at a very good time. I was ready to start my day. Unfortunately, karma was not good to me today and I locked myself out of my car. It was a little damper in my day until I paid a lot of…

November 2 and November 5

November 2 was spent observing some more classes with different teachers as well as some more 36 day writing workshop with my cooperating teacher. One of the teachers that I observed had a 10 honors class and she sat down with me and explained her logisitics of teaching. One of the things I really liked was this concept of a dilectal journal in which the students had to pick quotes that referred to a theme and then explain it. She also explained to me that she was going to…

October 29th

Today I have so much work to get done so I will just give a list of things that I did today:

  • Shadowed a female student and was very impressed with the classes she was taking. It ranged from jewerely design to treble choir to precalculus to advanced painting and drawing. I have seen two different math teachers and two different economic teachers. It is interesting to see the variety of teaching skills among the teachers
  • I sat in and observed the second day of the…

Still Observing

My day is spent still observing my c.t. and getting used to the building. There was a new set of students in the AIS class today, due to the A/B day schedule. I think it is there I might build a closer connection with students because the work is one on one. There is no lesson planning for AIS because it is the Learning Center as well. The students come in to work on essays or work for other classes. The drama class is watching Taming of the Shrew and we are finishing the movie as well as… Continue

Utterly Different

I do not know if I have the words to describe my experience today on my first day at HH high school. I do know that I did not come home with a splitting headache, a dry mouth, or agida because the children were so incredibly different than the middle school students. I feel like I have entered teh twilight zone and I am in the perfect school. The students do not fight in the hallways, they do not talk back to the teachers, they are actually smiling, and they acknowledge your presence. Now I… Continue

Last Day at the Middle School

So the very last day of student teaching in the middle school was a little more than what I expected it to be. But before I start I just have to say that the night before I made cake and cookies for the staff and students in my classes. The staff was more than appreciative but the students' thank yous only came from a slight few. I spent the day giving out survey's that would help me as I move on to my next placement. Some of the students were serious about my lessons and teaching style. One… Continue

Assessments

The past two days have been spent on these specific benchmark assessments the 8th graders must complete by the end of the year. Yesterday I showed them the assignment and we created an outline for it as well as an introduction. I ended up writing the introduction and the students just copied it. I was not teaching them how to write effectively, only how to copy well =/ In any case I explained to the students what their task was and that they could use thier notes for the essay. It was hard…

The Past Three Days

So, it has been while since I have written only because I have been so busy with completing things for my last week at my first placement. In any case last Friday went extremely well. I gave the students their vocabulary quiz and started them on finishing their mobiles. There was a twist in the day when I came back role palying one of the characters in the story we had been reading. One of the assignments that the students had to do was come up…

October 11, 2007

It was a long but successful day. Each class had a pop quiz and I think everyone seemed to do well. We completed a venn diagram that compared two chracters from two different texts. The class was put into groups to establish appropriate questions to ask Laurie's mom. I put them into groups and some students were not happy. There were groups that worked better than others and some students rolled their eyes or gasped when they found out who was in their group. I explained that this was only… Continue

October 9, 2007

Today was my first observation from my supervisor. While it went very well and I have positive feelings about I can say that the night before I could not get to sleep and my mind was in all different kinds of directions. However, once she got there my nerves were at ease as we spoke before class as well as after class. She sat at my cooperating teacher's desk and I felt so comfortable that I had forgotten she was even there. Prior to my supervisor coming I had told my C.T. to jump in as I… Continue

October 9, 2007

Today started as if there was really school on Monday. We dove right into the unit for the day. There were new vocabulary words on the board, (due to the copier being broken I had to improvise and go "old school"). Once we reviewed the vocabulary, I handed out the story for the day "Charles" by Shirley Jackson. As we read through there were a couple of questions to ask and things to correct such as the word "rubbers" which students mistook for protection when in reality the author was…

October 5, 2007

Friday, good old Fridays. I was more than happy to see the weekend come. It was defintily a stressful week as per the class had been reviewing how to write an effective introductary paragraph, reviewing grammar, and going over the assessment test that the students must complete in their 8th grade year. Friday consisted of taking two exams, one vocabulary test and the assessment itself. This assessment task asked for students to read "Paul…

Monday Blues Not in my book

So today, I was back to school after recovering from an awful tonsil infection that left me literally speechless. I had gone to bed late the night before and I have no idea where the energy came to get up this morning and continue vigorously throughout the whole day. I checked in with my cooperating teacher and she gave me a run down of what had happend on Friday. There a few house things to deal with such as finishing up handouts and such. I was able to jump right in with my new unit on… Continue

No Title

Yesterday was a long day at school as per it was parent teacher day. The day was spent going over graphic organizers and homework. The rest of the evening until 7 I worked on my lesson plans for the next two days. Not being an official teacher even I was nervous about meeting the parents. My cooperating teacher was kind enough to introduce me as I have a role in the classroom. There weren't too many parents who came as my cooperating teacher says that many know the drill. After that night I… Continue

A much better day, September 19, 2007

Today was such a better day. I had full attention of the students and rarely had to deal with discipline problems. I think part of that came from the fact that we were all reading the story today. In order to keep the students engaged I had them read and I would ask questions based on the sentences used the day before for the prediction activity. I was sure to read with different voices and emotion so that the story remained fresh in thier minds and so that they would not fall asleep. The story… Continue

Great Lesson Gone Bad

Today I had the opportunity to really get into the classroom and teach a lesson that was relevant to the curriculum but it did not go as well as I had planned. Just thinking about it gets me in a tizzie. There was a vocabulary test given today and that went well. Many of the students did well while others did not. After the test I handed out the index cards with the sentences/phrases that were in the short story. The students were put into groups, this was not such a great plan. They were all… Continue

September 17, 2007

After a long four day weekend, I was back in the classroom ready to get those Monday blues out of my class. Today, we played a review game for the students because tomorrow is their vocabulary test. I designed a word search with the words inside and definitions outside. So the students had to find the words with only having the knowledge of the definitions. Unfortunately, it only worked out that way with one class. The other periods I gave the opportunity for them to have a word bank and really… Continue

Day Off Day for Reflecting

So I sit here at my computer in my pjs still on thinking about yesterday at school. I have handed the students a book project and they have to read a mystery. Many of them are not excited because most don't like mystery and I thought to myself, I didn't either. So I took some advice and I am going to read with the students and complete the assignment for myself so that they don't feel I am trying to torture them. Yesterday the we brought the classes to the library so that they could find a…

Tuesday September 11

Today I meet with my supervisor and after our discussion I am looking forward in having her view one of my classes. We discussed a few things such as joining the students with the Do Now. There might be more efficiency and participation from the students if I model with them. We also discussed graduate school and I recieved some feedback. Still unsure as what I am going to do. After our meeting I jumped right into third period and taught the inclusion class the lesson. I tried working on the…

September 10, 2007

The good old Monday mornings. Running late today because I had to put the top on my Jeep and thankfully, I was safe from the rain. I did manage to get to school on time however. Today, I handed out the book projects for the 8th graders to do. Most of them did not seem excited as they find these projects monotonous. The book project consists of students taking on the voice of a journalist and writing a newspaper article on the mystery that they just read. There are five questions that the…
