o work in a voluntary capacity as part of a research project. It means interviews can take place at a time suitable to be both parties, rather that a set parent/teacher interview day or time. We were involved in a project with our education department and the University of Melbourne was commissioned to conduct a survey re the results. On negotiating a suitable time, they were rather concerned that we were a 3 1/2 hour drive from them, so we met in elluminate online and the interview was conducted at a time that suited both of us This was a much cheaper and more convenient solution. They needed follow up so this was also conducted online and would not have taken place had they needed to travel long distances.
Your suggestion also actively involves parents (important stakeholders in education) in the very online tools that we work with in our students. It gives them practical insight into their potential and powerful learning outcomes.…
ree and I need to expand my paper.
We carried out an online exchange with a Scottish high school from Edinburgh. Every Tuesday around lunch time we met online. Unfortunately we encountered a lot of technical problems. We all started out with vRoom by Elluminate (which is a great tool) but the Scottish firewall got into the way. So we switched to Skype (which would be banned in Scottish schools). This wasn't too much of an success either. The most we got were eight simultaneous connections at a time. I wonder if technology (bandwidth) is ready for such a project in class.
I'm still trying to find a simple and free audio / video chat tool to engage the students into eTandem language learning (http://www.slf.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/etandem/etindex-en.html). I don't give up yet...…
et. I teach students for two lessons a week for information technology at year 7 and 8, so we blog a lot and work on global projects. However time is restricting on the amount that we accomplish.
Last year many teachers in our school encouraged the students to blog but time and access to the computer labs prevent the students in the primary school using them much - so I have found that disappointing. With my years 9-11 classes, we blog, use wikis and nings and I also use elluminate as a virtual classroom software and participate in many global projects which require working on wikis and nings. However, I am working towards getting my work up on line for senior classes so that I become the facilitator and not so much a teacher.
Well done on what you are doing. That is great and wonderful to know that you are starting the students off with great digital footprints from an early age.…
going to talk all about:
EduBloggerCon - now in its fourth year, this all-day unconference gathering for those interested in social media / Web 2.0 in education takes place the Saturday (July 26) before the official ISTE start. Honestly, this is a great event, and many will tell you it is the event to attend at ISTE because it's all about connecting and sharing. The website for EduBloggerCon is at http://www.edubloggercon.com, but the organizing for the actual events of the day won't start for a few weeks yet. If you want others to know that you are going to attend, you can sign up here, although no advanced registration is required. We meet in the Colorado Convention Center thanks to the generosity of ISTE, we have access to free wireless, but bring extra computer batteries or make sure you're fully charged up because this is a BYOP (bring-your-own-power) event.
OpenSourceCon - for the first time ever, a parallel FREE all-day unconference for those interested in Open Source in education. Same basic details and the same day as EduBloggerCon (you can even go back and forthe between the two), but not organized at all yet! :) Will be soon--in fact, email me if you want to help! http://www.opensourcecon.com is where the details will emerge.
Bloggers' Cafe - also in its fourth year, this is an amazing gathering place at the conference center where there are couches, tables, chairs, and fun people to meet all during ISTE. Do not be intimidated if you are new to the social media world--we want you to come and be a part of this informal gathering. Biggest idea for this year: a live webcam and mic so that those not at ISTE can say hi and chat with those who are.
ISTE "Unplugged" - this will be the second year of this incredible opportunity to present at ISTE even if you have never done so before, weren't accepted to speak, or just have something valuable to say! Run inside the convention center near the Bloggers' Cafe, on the same timetable as the conference, we have a small presentation area where you can sign up to present to both a live and a remote audience (those not at ISTE can watch all the presentation via Elluminate). We still can't believe that ISTE let's us do this, but they do, and we think they are awesome because of it!
Classroom 2.0 Birds of a Feather Meeting - Tuesday, 6/29/2010, 4:45pm–6:15pm. Come meet other members of Classroom 2.0 and have some fun as we share with each other. Usually a BIG crowd for this one!
Classroom 2.0 LIVE Broadcast - time and date to be determined. Come meet with Peggy, Kim, and Lorna as they broadcast a live show from ISTE that features YOU as the guests. :)
Open Source Pavilion, Speaker Series, and Playground Area - this terrific speaker track, supported generously as a formal part of the ISTE conference now, is not to be missed if you're an Open Source enthusiast or wanna-be. We need volunteers, too, who can help to man some of the playground stations!
Global Education Poster Session - as part of the amazing 5-day online global education conference in November that we're just starting to announce, we'll be manning a poster session table on Sunday night to give details and make connections with the larger community. Volunteers also needed for this!
Does this list amaze you as it does me? I'm so excited to see so many of you at the show! And for those that can't attend, we hope we provide you with lots of good, streamed content so that you can have some of the same fun.
Our meeting tomorrow helps us to plan and brainstorm together. For instance: what do you hope we'll do at EduBloggerCon this year? Do we want Classroom 2.0 buttons or EduBloggerCon buttons, or something else? Do you like the idea of the Bloggers' Cafe webcam? Please do come and tell us! I'm also posting this message as a forum discussion in Classroom 2.0 in case you can't make the event and want to contribute ideas there.
Date: Sat., May 1, 2010Time: 9:00am PST / 10:00am MST / 11:00am CST / 12:00pm EST / 4pm GMT
Location: In Elluminate at http://tinyurl.com/cr20live. The Elluminate room will be open up to 30 minutes before the event if you want to come in early. To make sure that your computer is configured for Elluminate, please visit http://www.elluminate.com/support. Recordings of the session will be posted within a day of the event at the event page.

see fairly often. Bigger conferences have great buzz and excitement, more to see and do, although they can also be exhausting and overwhelming. Sometimes big conferences feel like lots of overlapping small conferences, and like the edublogger experience at NECC, you end up feeling like you saw a tiny piece of what was going on. It just highlights eveything you missed!
It will be interesting to see how online conferences add to the experience as time goes on. They are relatively new, and I'm not sure anyone knows yet if they are a replacement for face-to-face conference experiences, or something completely different. I know the few I've participated in haven't made me think that they are going to replace real conferences anytime soon - there's still a feeling of disconnectedness, of there being "no there there". It's not like you can have a real conversation with anyone through Elluminate or Moodle, or even in a string of blog comments.
PS Lucy - NAIS consistently has the BEST lineup of keynote speakers I've ever seen...…
oint presentations open at once.
However, the acer aspire netbooks for school have been great for what we need them for. My year 7s have to borrow some for an online elluminate class that we run with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Ajax. They work really well with that. Most students are on desktops in the computer lab but as I have 28 students, there are not enough computers for all of them and there have been no problems at all.
The grade 5 students are being subsidized by the Victorian Education dept and part paid for by school and part paid for by parents. These are lenovos and the kids only got them at the end of last term, so time will tell how well these go. But, the 15 netbooks in the library are constantly being borrowed either individually or as a class set, as it gives teachers a chance to use the internet and/or computers when the computer lab is booked or timetabled (which it is nearly all the time.)…
d to distance collaborationsl: School Beyond the Walls , Skype, and Elluminate.
For example, last year, a video introducing our Vendée Globe project with many schools around the world:

and have now moved on to a position where I work with several districts helping them to integrate technology. I have been asked to help locate classrooms around the globe interested in collaborative projects. We are looking to collaborate using Elluminate as a platform for real-time communication and sharing of ideas, and then use a wiki or a blog to share information as the project progresses.
Here is a link to the project my school did last year - it would be amazing to take this a step further and actually communicate with schools around the world to answer the guiding question. If you are interested in this project, contact me at kim.jurczak@prometheanworld.com. We have classrooms from grades K-12 that would be interested in participating, so any age is welcome!…

ic "continuity planning." I'm hoping you will consider helping to build this resource by including any information that you may have, and by pointing to or participating in the "conversations" that are starting to take place on these topics. I've also set up a Twitter account at http://www.twitter.com/edready for announcements of events and any news.
I'd also like to quickly start hosting a series of webinars on preparedness and planning, and would like to highlight and encourage any other events or meetings taking place. If you know someone you think would be a good person for me to bring on as a guest or to interview, please email me back directly at steve@hargadon.com. If you would like to hold your own meeting or event on this topic, let me know at the same address and I'll send you instructions for using the free Elluminate room at LearnCentral.org, and then help publicize what you do.
Thanks!…
