Hi Christine, working in virtual classrooms is something that I am working really hard toward. There are some teachers in Australia working on the same concept but it has not taken off in mainstream yet. I teach students for two lessons a week for information technology at year 7 and 8, so we blog a lot and work on global projects. However time is restricting on the amount that we accomplish.
Last year many teachers in our school encouraged the students to blog but time and access to the computer labs prevent the students in the primary school using them much - so I have found that disappointing. With my years 9-11 classes, we blog, use wikis and nings and I also use elluminate as a virtual classroom software and participate in many global projects which require working on wikis and nings. However, I am working towards getting my work up on line for senior classes so that I become the facilitator and not so much a teacher.
Well done on what you are doing. That is great and wonderful to know that you are starting the students off with great digital footprints from an early age.
Hello Claudine and welcome to classroom2.0 I also like the idea of virtual classrooms but I teach in the secondary area. You will find this to be an excellent resource and please share with us when you can.
With your interest in Virtual Classrooms, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here's an article concerning Online Education. Here’s a public class recording you might find of interest.
