I teach Math 8 and I'm doing an inquiry on how providing increased options for at-home support will affect my students' competence and confidence in mathematics.

Some strategies I currently use are:
-having a class website with a blog and wiki attached
-uploading notes, assignments and providing links on the site for games and further support
-email correspondence with students seeking support

I want to kick it up a notch.  Some ideas I am throwing around are:
-using a wireless tablo to record process with voicethread (although I have no idea how to do this yet)
-using Skype to set up some tutorial times in the evenings for students needing some extra support (but not too time consuming, maybe half hour a few times/week)

Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can go about this? Thanks!!!

Hello Laura,

Your ideas sound like in good track. I work at the higher education level (PCC in Oregon), but have great admiration for K-12. One thing I would suggest is the use of Voicethread. It's really not that difficult, good help files and people have also posted Voicethreads on how to use it. Wish you the best.

Regards, Francisco
Set up skype "office hours". You are open to skype messages and discussion during certain times Less formal than a fixed tutorial time, but more flexible. Short and specific support on demand.
Great suggestion, thanks Bob.
I use Moodle as my "homework/project" help site to upload interactive websites, articles, videos, etc. of various sorts to differentiate for students.
Laura,

You could create tutorials using podcasts (Garageband is the option for a Mac) and link these to your class website. That way you don't have to be there in the evening hours by your computer explaining things, they are there for the students who need them. Another idea would be to have the students create these podcast tutorials. That way they are learning and owning their learning. Hope these ideas help. Good luck.
