As the novel opens, Nina is experiencing an intrinsic battle.  From the description given, some would consider Isaac to be a gangter in the neighborhood sense of the word.  Would you agree of disagree.  Explain your answer.  Discuss this battle and this shapes your expectancy for the remainder of the novel.  How is Isaac's personality as the novel opens relative to the character of Nina that we are introduced to? What is the conflict that appears as the novel opens and how does Miller grab the reader and maintain the attention of the audience?

Ensure that you use examples from the book to explain and support your response.

I agree..When Isaac was younger Spoony taught him how to hustle."My friend, you don't know the first thing about hustling. Stick with me, I'll teach you." Isaac said, "School can't teach me nothing. I'm a hustler, just like Al Capone. Isaac is Nina's babydaddy. When Nina was pregnant with Isaac baby. But she was at the abortion clinic about to abort Isaac's baby. And hebeat her for aborting his baby.
Charity, you make a strong point in identifying Isaac's desire to be a "hustler" and his more than willingness to follow Spoonie. But, in considering Isaac's personality as the novel opens, I would say that he has gangster characteristics as a pimp, if nothing else. In the book, we are informed that Nina is pregnant by Isaac but how does this set up our view of Isaac as he responds to Nina about her decisions that she attempts to make? I find myself wondering why Nina is even wanting to rid herself of the baby that is growing inside of her and how his lifestyle with her and other people in his life forms her decision and why. What do you think?
I agree that Isaac is a "gangsta" in a way, only because in the first chapter (ehich is as far as I've gotten thus far) he threatned to shove a picket protest sign down her throat for attempting an abortion
What in the first chapter leads you to believe that he is a gangster? Is it simply his forcefulness with Nina? I would love for your to explain.
In Former Rain In my on opinion, When Nina was pregnant with Isaac baby. But she was at the abortion clinic about to abort Isaac's baby. And hebeat her for aborting his baby. Basically she destroyed almost every chance of his name being immortal. In the story it quoted" ...Nina was trying to take that away from him. It wasn't enough thatshe was always complaining, always unhappy about something. Now she wanted to take his child, his future, his immortality. That shows that they have both done some bad things life but, she took it little to far with the abortion.
