About Me
I teach Science at Orem Junior High School in Utah. I teach grades 7-9 at the school. I'm preparing to begin my 24th year in the profession. I am my school's science department chair (and have been for 10 years) and am also in my third year as the Alpine School District Science Specialist. I am the workshop facilitator and webmaster for Utah's Sci-ber Text project (an online textbook for science use in grades 3-9.)

I am bilingual on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. I am comfortable trouble shooting most programs or computer problems. I have great Internet access at both home and school. (Both are connected with fiber optic.)

I became a Master Teacher when Intel® Education arrived in Utah in 2001. My students enjoy doing projects that I design using what I have learned from the Intel® Teach Program. I am also an eMints teacher and have one computer for every two students in my classroom.

Utah's Beauty

I enjoy observing Utah's great natural resources. Many of my photos of these areas are used in my classroom for students to use.

The following is my response to an email from a prospective teacher. She asked for suggestions on how to become most qualified to work in a school that is supportive of its students.…

Using Wordle Effectively

Posted on January 14, 2010 at 5:54pm 14 Comments

I thought I'd share my most current uses of Wordle.

First - Teacher Planning: I was just assigned a student teacher. To help her comprehend the "big ideas" of our state core, we pasted the sections of the core she will teach into Wordle. When the Wordle was created, the maximum number of words was lowered to 35 from the "Layout menu." This helped her see the main ideas she should spend the most time on during her teaching time in my… Continue

Online Activities for students

Creating a list of websites that let students learn concepts in a non-drill & kill format. These activities can be for any subject or grade level. Please take a few minutes and share your favorite activities with me in this Google document.

I'll be posting all results here when data is collected.

Inspirational Teacher Movies

Posted on September 20, 2009 at 8:37pm 0 Comments

I was contemplating movies that inspire or encourage teaching. As I reflected on this, I thought back to the first time I watched Stand and Deliver. This movie was inspirational as I watched a teacher demonstrate an unwillingness to accept poor performance by students. At that this point, I changed my thinking - worrying about the individual student and their success in class. Lately, I have again altered my thinking to be more along the lines of "What did we learn" rather than "What did I… Continue

Ending Failing Grades

Posted on September 4, 2009 at 5:21pm 4 Comments

As I began this year, I considered how to motivate students to succeed in Science. I realized many who think they “cannot do science” instead just do not complete their work. I, therefore, decided to not give a grade to work turned in “incomplete” but require these students to come to my classroom during our school’s “flex” time. We run flex time on Tuesdays - Fridays. This is 30 minutes where students who have either an “F” or “Incomplete” grade in any class are required to work with that… Continue

Hi Glen. I was wondering if your students would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. Perhaps you have some educator contacts you could direct me to. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!

Glen,

Hi, this is Kevin. Hope your summer is going well and you had some time to relax.

I've started a new Ning network for Middle School Science Teachers and I thought you might like to join as you are also a m.s. science teacher. I thought it would be really good to have just middle school science teachers share some of their labs, demos, concerns, what works and what doesn't about teaching this level. Hope to see you there.

Thanks, Kevin
