UNschooling really means that we are non-traditional in our approach to presenting curriculum. Monarch Rock is a non-denominational school as well. We cover the necessary basics for each grade level, but we may cover 2 or 3 subjects at a time: Example; Drawing a picture using only specified geometric shapes while mom reads aloud or Classical music is playing in the background. We do a lot of discussion time and research (thoroughly) our subject matter. We try to put forth a 'seamless curriculum' where the subject matter leads from one to another; Example: Start out by going for a walk, observing nature, come inside and look at a book on birds, discuss flying, make a paper airplane, discuss The Wright Brothers, talk about inventors, do an essay on 'Favorite inventor'...talk about patents and perhaps write an essay on "What I'd like to invent"...all things connect which makes for a better learning experience and one more memorable and applicable to real life. About a year ago I did some research on curriculum and found a link to an education reformer who believes in the same approach! (I didn't even know I HAD an approach! LOL!) Here is his website: www.marionbrady.com and of course, MY website www.monarchrock.com Please share this info with friends, students, teachers and parents as it may be beneficial to their school/homeschool. Thanks. :) P.S. I also use some Montessori methods in my homeschooling...i.e. lots of manipulatives and no grading/testing. We only do test prep for the yearly Standardized Test that is required in NY State.
