Hi Cynthia,

I'm in Chicago, but am on the National Advisory Board of a DC group called Mentors Inc. I also helped start a Detroit area Mentoring network. I lead the Tutor/Mentor Connection and have been using the internet to gather and share information related to helping inner city kids access an expanded network of adult support and learning via non-school, volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs.

I'm piloting some uses of Geographic Information Systems for this purpose, and focusing on capacity building, e.g., helping all of the different tutor/mentor programs in the city get the dollars, volunteers, ideas, etc. each needs to innovate better ways to connect kids and volunteers. See some maps on this blog.

I hope you and AIR will follow our work and share it with others.

About me – hmm…I live right outside of DC and work for a great organization called American Institutes for Research (AIR). I work with a few projects at AIR, including the National Center for Technology Innovation (NCTI). I’m all about online networks, but have been struggling with Twitter (I can’t find any of my friends who use it!). Really looking forward to getting started with Classroom 2.0.
