Adding Bloom’s Revised and Digital Taxonomy to a Lesson:

Recently, I gave a lecture on internal marketing to all of our office managers, during our company’s national manager’s conference.  The key point to the lecture was to discuss the different ways that they could personally market their office and therefore, have a direct effect on the growth of the company and their individual locations.

During the time of the lesson we easily hit on the lower order thinking skills.  I asked the managers to think of a time when they were at a store and had an employee go above and beyond for them (remembering).  Then we talked about how we could take some of these examples and use them in our offices (understanding).  I was then able to have them apply some of that knowledge by breaking them up into smaller groups and giving them hypothetical situations and they had to come up with a way to internally market our office and provide the best service possible based on each scenario.

I wasn’t able to cover more of the higher order thinking skills due to a large amount of information that needed to be covered in a short amount of time.  However, if we had more time the day of the lecture I could’ve added an activity where we would take two similar companies and compare their differences and similarities, and in doing so, we would try to decide which company has the better customer service (analyzing).   Moving beyond the day of the lecture I could have the managers create a method of monitoring and tracking their new business numbers to see if their marketing efforts are working (evaluating).  Finally, I could request that the managers and their staff create an annual internal marketing action plan that would help their teams set goals and plan to accomplish them throughout the year (creating).

My lecture could have been even more beneficial if I had the time and resources to add some of the sections of Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy to the lesson as well.  Asking the managers to do an internet search for marketing ideas for dental clinics and then save the resources to a social bookmarking page.  They could then subscribe to any feeds that might give updates for marketing tips throughout the year.  I could also request that the group of managers create a group blog where they could share ideas and post successes with their marketing.

Janelle, I really like your idea to have the managers blog to share their ideas.  Creating a wiki that they could all build off of could also be a useful tool.  I've often wondered how adults in the real world would react to being taught using digital tools instead of the traditional ways.  Through our online classes I have seen some not take to it very well, though.
