How can guided reading happen while other students are working in groups independently?

Hi this is Lamyaa from Egypt. I have 24 students in grade 3 class and I am suffering from running the guided reading while other students are working in groups. I see that there is a loud nose in class and I think students who are reading with me in a group can not focus.

I have been using the daily 5 and extension centers in my class since I taught 1st grade. I am now teaching 3rd grade and having centers is still effective for skill building, cooperative learning, and time I am able to meet with my reading groups. Completion of tasks will hold them accountable and i have exit slips that are the checklists of daily tasks in centers and students choose a task from a center, complete it, and wait until we transition to move to their next designation. Because they know they are on a time schedule, keeping on task is what they know they have to do. After my last reading group, i quickly call ea student to come have their slips checked and stamped. Incomplete tasks are where the student will begin the next day in addition to the tasks for that day. This goes home to parents daily. The appropriate way to work in centers has to be modeled to students no matter what age. We do trial runs and I let them know when they have done a great job in working and transitioning. I have seen this modeled a million ways from different teachers so it's what works for you. I learned that the tasks and the centers have to be meaningful and aligned with what's being learned or they won't be successful at all. I've even incorporated challenges that involve exploration beyond the classroom just to keep students continuously engaged. I always acknowledge a group or pair or independent student I see working on task and I've rewarded students with lunch with the teacher, 10 minutes teach time where class is led by a student in a topic of interest where they have to have plans and all. If you haven't tried incorporation of centers, it wouldn't hurt. Here's the website to a little more information on the daily five.http://www.thedailycafe.com/public/department104.cfm
I hope I gave a little help; you just have to modify and adjust based on knowing your students and what will work with them and motivate them to use work time efficiently.
