What is your school policy for cell phone use? How do you control student cell phone use? What do you do to curb usage in your classroom?

Policy differs from school to school. But in a school where I was teaching several years ago, students were not allowed to bring in their cell phones. Instead, we had pay phones installed around the school and encouraged parents to contact the school office if there was an emergency etc. Nevertheless, there were students who continued to challenge this policy. Those found with a cell phone had to surrender it to the school office and collect it at the end of the school day. If students continued to challenge this policy, we would inform the parent(s) and have a sit-down discussion with them and the student(s).
