For those in the Chicago region, who are looking for ways to connect their students in meaningful ways with service and learning, and integrate the internet in the process, the Tutor/Mentor Conference is an entry point into this thinking.

It's a grassroots event, focused on helping existing tutor/mentor programs connect with peers, learn new ideas, and build resources for their work, while helping community groups build new programs in neighborhoods where there is a need, but no existing programs.

The conference was last Thursday and Friday. One participant came up to me on Friday morning and said "This is the best conference I've ever attended. It's awesome!"

About 50-60 people attended one or both days, and the workshops and networking was great. For T/MC, this is just part of an on-going process intended to build a network of people and organizations who focus on volunteer-based tutoring/mentoring as a strategy for helping inner city kids succeed in school and have the network of adult support that can also help them move past school and into careers.

At http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2007/11/national-football-league-alumni-score.html I posted some photos, showing a few of the people who we met. The next conference will be on May 29 and 30, in downtown Chicago. I hope some of you will participate.

I'm now recruiting speakers and organizing workshops for a May 29 and 30 conference to be held at the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. The conference web site is http://www.tutormentorconference.org
