DIY auto-marking spelling tests

I'm not involved in education any more apart from being a dad, (so, pretty involved I guess really!). But as a parent helper at my son's school we've made a weekly online spelling test, which auto-marks the learners' attempts and sends the results to an email address. It's another angle for the onslaught on raising fundamental literacy skills.

The coding was done by a colleague and he's made it so easy to make a new weekly test that I wanted to share it. It takes me about 15 minutes to… Continue

Digital exchange with a child in India

I am searching for a child in India who might do a digital exchange with my son! He is 8 and at school in Manchester, England. His topic this term is India and I wondered if there was an Indian child who might like to talk with him via Skype, or video message or audio or photos or text, to share their experiences of life and culture, and learn about each other's country.

Please reply here or message me if this is of interest!

Thanks

YouTube annotations

YouTube have a beta tool - annotations. I'm sure more features will appear soon as YouTube have acquired Omnisio but this will have huge implications in any curriculum area where the creation of media is core. I teach music and I've been waiting for something like this for a long time!

I've done a trial of how a music track might be delivered in YouTube with an ongoing analysis. Currently it is not possible to include the… Continue

blog sponsorship

Well, I'm not a prolific blogger, either here or there . I do it to focus my thoughts. Each to his own. I don't get many hits or comments, so I was most surprised to get an email from a well known elearning company asking to talk sponsorship with me. I'm not naive enough to be flattered by this but I'm not sure what to do. What's the catch? What's the hook?

ning and vle integration

I've been really impressed by the ning interface (and this network of course). I had a look round some other ning communities today (wow, there are many!) but few as active as this one.

One of the really appealing things about a ning community is the web interface. It integrates so many crucial aspects so sweetly - blogs, forums, video, audio, images.

The 'my page' is a neat feature that I've not seen in Moodle (our institution's VLE) and I wondered how I could integrate a ning… Continue

The impact of technology on learning

I'm writing this as a brief assignment in a teached ed programme, to demonstrate writing online - the subject is the impact of technology on learning.

Technology has exploded on our educational lives in the last decade, At the front end of the explosion were things for the teacher to do: use a computer to make handouts and assignment briefs, learn software to enhance their presentation skills, get savvy with gadgets like IWBs and digital cameras. And as those skills became… Continue
