In this ABRN How2 tip Preston and Tucker, collision repair students at Butler Community College, are doing a student led demonstration, demonstrating how to perform a plug weld using a MIG welder. Once welded, they demonstrate a destructive test method to determine if the plug weld passes the test.
A plug weld can replace the factory spot welds when repairing a vehicle in a body repair shop.… Continue

I typically have a clear and well-thought out purpose for each blog post, however for this blog post I am going to simply reflect on today's
professional development session. I lead a PD session about 7 weeks
ago for all of the staff members at my high school on social media and
technology integration, and today's session was an extension of the
previous session for any teachers interested. We asked each staff
member to choose… Continue

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend the EdcampKC technology conference in Kansas City, MO. This was my first
"unconference," which basically means the entire conference was
participant-driven and each session was presented by someone who was
actually attending the conference. There was a big board set up in the
main room, and before the conference officially started any person
interested in presenting was able to… Continue

Moliehi Sekese wakes up in the morning, packs up her laptop, fully charged, and heads of to teach her students at Mamoeketsi Government Primary School, Lesotho. From the minute class begins that morning, students crowd around her PC, exploring maths, science…
I am trying to create a class wiki for my ESL
students. The main topic would revolve around learning English. Anyone
know of any good wikis that I can direct my students to for ideas. Also
does anyone know of any experts who would be interested in editing and
commenting on student work?
I am also interested in connecting with other ESL/ELD teachers. Anyone intrested in collaborating on a project?
We are well into the new school year by now. In my family, we have settled into a routine of driving to schools and then driving to sports after school. With three kids in three different schools and three different schedules, driving has been really hectic (no school bus system where we live). However, we believe it is important for our kids to have a balanced set of activities, that combines academics with sports and other things.
The video made me realize that current K-12 students live in technology era. Thus, the usage of technology to enhance communication, creativity, collaboration, and media literacy of students are very important for their future careers. In Indonesia, especially in urban areas, children are growing up with technology. Technology are part of their daily lives. Television,…
If somebody asked me about the last 6 months of my life, I would respond
by saying something like this; the past 6 months have been extremely
challenging, but yet at the same time I can say with little hesitation
that I have grown more as an educator in the last 6 months than in any
other time period in my life.
The world in which we live is changing faster than anyone could ever
imagine, and because of this the educational system must evolve and… Continue

I just came home from the movies. In the film I saw (The Kids Are Alright), one character when asked why he dropped out of school says, "I just thought it was a big waste of money for something I could learn myself, from a book."
This was something I had realized early, sitting in the town library one "PD" or professional development day, years ago in grade 8. I was flipping through a National Geographic and chanced upon an article about Jane Goodall. I was stoked, we had… Continue

As a parent of a 14-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl, I am very careful whenever I use the words 'special needs' in connection with children.
On the one hand I believe that every child is a special needs child, simply because they are all individuals, each with their own special needs. Many of those special needs they have in common with other children – for example the need to be truly loved, cared for and… Continue

In my German 3 class we recently finished a story we have been reading for the last three weeks. We have done several different types of
activities to facilitate the understanding of this story, and each
different activity has proven to have both its advantages, and
disadvantages. The unique thing about the activities I have done is
that each activity is something brand new that I have never tried
before. As any educator… Continue

My wife and I have been married for a little under three years, and about a year ago we decided that we wanted
to grow our family. As we discussed the most typical way of growing a
family (a baby), we came to the conclusion that we should start small
before taking the big leap. Last summer we purchased an 8 pound, runt
of the litter, slightly discolored, adorable, and loving yellow lab
puppy.…

One of the things that most of us strike as parents - or teachers - at some stage or another, is finding a way to motivate our children in one particular area or another.
Over the last couple of weeks I have been spending a lot of time meeting and speaking to homeschool families as we have been promoting the benefits of our online subtitled…Continue

I watched this video on TED: Ideas worth spreading (which I highly recommend) http://www.ted.com/,
and I have to say I was really intrigued by the topic. Every day at
school I get the opportunity to see students growing and
developing...some more than others, and some not enough. However
inconsistent their growth may be, one thing is for certain...the growth
and development of children can be summed up in one word - amazing! If
we… Continue

I love to play the guitar and on the anniversary of Jimi Hendrix death this question got me thinking about what and how we teach our children.
Imagine you teach guitar and a kid walks in that is playing a left-handed guitar upside down. Most guitar players have picked up bad habits that the teacher will want to get rid of and sort out before moving on to bigger and better things. But this was one of the things that Jimi was renown for, and that many will suggest gave him his unique… Continue
