About Me
I am assistant professor of Learning Technologies at UNT. My work mainly focuses on developing forms of online instruction that leverage Web 2.0, open-source, and mainly free technologies to improve engagement, access, and student exposure to learning environments besides Web CT/Blackboard, etc. that I see crippling student ability to function outside them. I'm also a proponent of designing instruction that embeds gaming elements as a means to improve engagement.

My past efforts including collaborating on Quest Atlantis to build the Taiga science environment, my own Anytown writing game environment, and writing the books that underly the larger narrative for that multi-user virtual environment.

I am currently working on two iterative design processes to develop and research games for learning. One is a series of undergraduate course redesigns that embed game elements and PBL to engage students with learning in a computer skill-based curriculum. The first of the series is called "The Door" and uses Second Life and some other online products to develop an alternate reality game curriculum influenced by things like "i love bees," "Oculus," "Perplex City," and "Deus City."

The second project is in collaboration with the Created Realities Group which expands on the Anytown environment to develop a mystery/ghost story game environment called "Chalk House" to engage 8th grade students in reading and writing activities set in a haunted house. This is influenced by a series of children's books currently in development with the first title "Walled Lake" set to be completed by Christmas of '07.
