Parellels between mobile devices in K-12 and post secondary

Posted on July 17, 2009 at 9:01am 0 Comments

Participated yesterday in ACU's Exploring Mobile Learning Online Conference, spoke on mobility in K-12. http://www.acu.edu/technology/mobilelearning/conferences/online/index.html

It was interesting to learn that surveys of students at both levels had similar results. Students using mobile devices found learning more interesting and reported they were more engaged in learning. Another reason to listen to our students...

Working with a team virtually to get a project done...

Posted on July 11, 2009 at 10:00am 1 Comment

This summer we're experimenting with free web-based software allowing staff to collaborate virtually and at times face to face on projects. The two we've used are Zoho Projects and Basecamp. I'd put out a tweet asking if there were similar products written for the K-12 environment and got back an iPhone/iPod touch app recommendation for SimplyBox, a free browser/collaboration tool. Our teachers are very interested in using these web-based tools for collaborative student projects this fall. We… Continue

Honoring the Digital Natives, our Students

Posted on July 7, 2009 at 1:23pm 0 Comments

A year ago at our school we chose iPod touches as our pilot mobile computing device. We made that decision for a number of reasons but the most powerful decision makers were our students. This was their computer of choice. So many times over the last year I've been asked why we didn't choose another device for our pilot. To our students at our school the choice was so clear, "crystal" as one eighth grader often states.

Digital natives expect their access to information to be mobile;… Continue

Importing Audio CD audiobooks into iTunes

Posted on April 7, 2009 at 6:00am 0 Comments

I'm not sure if anyone else has run into this but within schools we used to have students listen to books on tape, anyone remember those days? Of course in more recent years we've purchased many audio CD audiobooks to support our literacy departments. With our iPod Touches we've been exploring methods of moving that purchased content into our iTunes account for our students. Although we've not found it to be nearly as easy as moving purchased music...there is a site at aldoblog.com that has… Continue

Thank you for writing back, Susan. I began writing a reply only to find out that there's a character limit on Classroom 2.0 messages. Can I have your email address to continue the discussion?

Long story short, my publishing company is taking a serious look at developing curriculum specifically for mobile devices such as the iPod touch. I know your program has had considerable success with some of the apps and materials already available, but I would like to know what an educator might want to see in mobile curriculum that has yet to be developed. It's not as simple as just asking a variety of teachers what they'd want to see, because many simply don't know what is possible. Culbreth Middle is clearly on the leading edge as far as implementing mobile technology into the classroom, so I feel like you would be in a unique position to provide the kind of input that I'm looking for.

I will continue to follow your discussion thread on iPod implementation intently, as it has already been a wonderful resource. I look forward to discussing this with you in greater detail. My email address is msheehy@learningsourceltd.com. Thanks for your time!

Hello everyone. I have been using an Ipod Touch for a little over 6 months now and would like to hear from those of you who are using them in your classes what impacts it has had for student learning? What apps do you find most useful? I am doing some research for a presentation on Portable Devices in the classroom and would love to hear about other people's experiences.

Any perspectives you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to you Susan for starting this forum and everyone in advance for providing feedback.

You can also follow me @leewin if you are a fello tweep like myself.

Cheers!

Hi Susan,

With your work in Education Technology and Online Learning, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording conducted by Nellie Deutsch on Technology Integration.

Let me know if you wanted to try the SDK application at your school ( Free).
You heard about our program from Apple? May I ask who you heard this from at Apple?

Thanks
