Nathan Yon was born on November 9, 1973 in Anderson, South Carolina, son of Rev. Bill Yon and a public school teacher/counselor Jennie Auten Yon. After brief stays in Greenville and Pacolet, the Yon’s moved to the Hollywood section of Saluda County where Nathan’s father pastored Deans Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church for several years.
As a teenager, he moved with his family to Whitmire, on the Union side of Newberry County, where he graduated from Whitmire High School. At Whitmire High, Nathan participated in everything from football to band to Gifted/Talented of Theater. Yon was even named “Student of the Year” by the Newberry Exchange Club, a club he would one day join after college graduation.
As a Founder’s Scholar at Newberry College, Nathan Yon decided to commit his life to education and public service where he was actively involved in student government and the winner of the Forum for Contemporary Thought. Upon graduation, Yon taught in South Carolina’s public school system.
In 1996, Nathan decided to use his abilities in public relations and marketing to improve education. After serving as political consultant for several state and national non-profit and political campaigns with education as their platform. He returned to the classroom until his decision to run for the South Carolina Senate District 18 Seat when was endorsed by The State newspaper for his youthful vigor and for his commitment to education reform in 2000. Nathan also owned YonCom, a marketing/advertising firm and was an associate of ProVest Wealth Advisers at this time. Mr. Yon continues to share his enterprising spirit with young people as a mentor, a global career development facilitator, and a certified entrepreneurship instructor.
Following his bid for State Senate, Nathan remained in private business until his return to education as a fulltime educator in 2005. Active in numerous civic and educational organizations, Nathan Yon is devoted to improving the quality of lives through education and economic development at home and abroad. In missons, Yon has helped support orphaned and abandoned children in developing countries while continuing to pursue his professional goals at home in working with at-risk youth in the “Bedrock” of Columbia, South Carolina and in Newberry, South Carolina where he and his wife Maureen live.
In 2010, Mr. Yon, along with a handful of other educators, created the Newberry Accelerated Learning Academy to help non-traditional and at-risk students improve their basic skills and earn their high school diplomas. Mr. Yon continues to push to discover more effective and innovative ways to educate and empower our future leaders, including the development of new blended and hybrid instructional models and a publicly funded STEM (science technology, engineering, and mathematics) program.
His diverse experiences as an educator and a leader have given him opportunities to gain a broad perspective of the education of students of many ages and walks of life in South Carolina and throughout other parts of the world making Nathan Yon an invaluable asset to his
