Videos- A vision of k-12 students today

After watching the videos I feel like we truly are dealing with a different student than a few years ago. I found myself wondering why we give the students textbooks. It's not neccessarily that they aren't reading, but it's what they are reading that is the issue. They are more likely to research an article online and read it than out of a text book. I feel now that the traditional school setting is almost just silly when we compare it to how the students live the rest of their lives. Perhaps as teachers we need to take a look at not just how relevant the information is that we give our students, but also how we give it and how we give them opportunities to learn.

Hi Kristen. I was in Brad Niessen's Baker class, too, and joined this community. So far I am having trouble finding any other SMSD teachers involved! I teach English at Hocker Grove, so even though that's a different subject, at least my students will eventually be your students! I'd like to make better use of this community so I thought I'd start with trying to find colleagues! Enjoy the last week of your summer!

Thanks for the reflection on the video. I myself still find it hard to go totally away textbooks...that is hard to say when you do technology for a living. I hope this video gives you another look technology in the classroom.
