Dr. Ray McCarthy is a Senior Fellow in the Doctor of Education program at the College of Professional Studies. His interests include science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); Multiple Intelligence Theory; and technology and engineering studies of the human-made world. Dr. McCarthy also focuses his research on the cultural and historical studies of education and gender, as well as socioeconomic equity, public school leadership, climate, and culture.
Prior to joining the College, he taught leadership and methods courses at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Fitchburg State University. Dr. McCarthy worked for 35 years as a public school teacher with an extensive background in experiential learning.
His most recent publications include “Moving Beyond Cultural Barriers: Successful Strategies of Female Technology Education Teachers” in the Journal of Technology Education, as well as “Beyond Smash and Crash: Gender Friendly Tech Ed” and “Beyond Smash and Crash: Part Two,” both in Technology Teacher.
Dr. McCarthy served as president of MassTEC for three years, and writes, edits, and publishes the bimonthly newsletter, The MassTEC Express. He also is a member of Governor Deval Patrick’s STEM Advisory Council Diversity Subcommittee.
