Thanks for the info on blog use.. Interesting to know teachers are using them. I like the idea of brainstorming a few discussion ideas.. No I have not figured out real time yet!! Are you logging on tomorrow night for 6610?

Hi Cyndie
Just trying to see if my message can be sent from school. I spoke to walter and he said that other teachers in the system have used blogs before so we should not have any trouble. Jamie parsons from gonzaga had one last year for his AP Biology class. Walter is going to check with him to see if there were any issues. . When we meet on firday Lise had a good idea we should come up with a series of questions to have a discussion amongst ourselves. I still haven't figured out how we are supposed to chat on line in 'real' time have you ?

Just reading the messages left by Lisa and You. I don't know about the policy on blogs but I do know that you cannot access chat rooms from school computers. Since blogs might fall into the same category they might not be accessable. The best thing would be to check with the thec guy for the board. I will ask Walter who he is and send him an email.

Lisa, you raise a very valid point here,. Before embarking on blog use is essential to check out the board policy first. I would hazard to think that with blog use being relatively new that the board might not yet have a policy in place. I would think that it would be up to the individual schools' administration to put something in place. I also suggest informing parents before having students engage in a blog.

Cyndie,
Do you know if the eastern school district has a policy regarding blog use in the classroom? I am not aware of one. I wonder if the manner in which these are handled varies from school to school. If that is the case, policy development is a need!

I don't know about blogs but I do have a lot of logs. Getting my students to read a page and find the answer is even difficult . Perhaps a bit later in the semester

Hi Cyndie,
I would have to say that I think Blogs are a great way to promote critical thinking in the classroom. Because they are a type of asychronous "chat", students have time to think about the topic at hand before they respond. This time for reflection, in my opinion, is when the higher level of crical thinking occurs. Students are apt to look at all possible viewpoints before adopting one as their own. The options available today of linking various multimedia to support their thoughts allow room for creative expression of their critical thinking.
How restricted do you think classroom blogs should be? Would you open it to learners beyond your own school? If so, to what audiences? If not, why not? I'm interested in your views on this topic.
