Social Dilemmas

Chapter 8 addresses the use of technology and social media tools to solve social dilemmas. Given my field, the title caught my eye, especially the section entitled, "Self Help We Don't Approve Of." It goes on to described an online bulletin board set up by a teen magazine to talk about subjects important to teen girls. Eventually the magazine shut down the bulletin board because a group of girls were swapping tips on being anorexic. Although the bulletin board was successful and useful to many…See More

Cindy Kraft replied to Drew McAllister's discussion What are some benefits and challenges to using Twitter as a tool to engage and/or develop your PLN? in the group Social Media 101
"Now that I am set up on Twitter and have an app on my iPhone, I think I'm starting to get it! One of the beneifts is that it is a quick read, and many websites have a Twitter link that make it easy to get their Reader's Digest version…"

Christy Prudence commented on Cindy Kraft's blog post "Everyone is a Media Outlet"
"Internet safety is just as important as every other safety procedure we talk about at school now. We are so lucky to have all of the technology we do in Parkway, but we also need to educate those that receive this privilege!"

"Everyone is a Media Outlet"

I think Shirky's use of Ivanna's phone story brings up interesting ethical and relational questions. He notes, "the willingness of humans to feel wronged is infinite. Do we want a world where, whenever someone with this kind of leverage gets riled up, they can unilaterally reset the priorities of the local police department?" We know some of our students can quickly feel an injustice has occurred (maybe a lower grade than expected, or a not making a team) and feel passionate about righting that…See More

Jumping in the water...

OK, here goes my first attempt at posting... As a district social worker, I may be the only non-teacher in the group. Often the professional development classes don't pertain to the work we do, so I was excited to see a course that is relevant to my work with students and a topic that is an integral part of their lives. Now, if only I can get up to half their speed in turns of knowledge and skills... As someone who hasn't even set up a Facebook account, because I don't think I have the time to…See More

About Me
I have been a school social worker for Parkway for 5 years. I love my job and the opportunity to address challenges that keep students from learning. I work in the West Area and have great colleagues that work collaboratively together.
We have two daughters, 24 and 20 years old. Glenn and I have been married 28 years--yikes that sounds so long! We are very blessed every day by family, friends and work.
