With a smile I can say that I wish to return to teaching as an older, one-year of experience teacher. Classroom management was, to say the least, not my strong quality. Everything I had done in 1984 absolutely didn't work in 2007. After taking the Praxis I was licensed in Virginia and began teaching at New Kent High School in Providence Forge, VA. The night before school started my home was hit by lightening and all electrical appliances and telephones were wiped out (a financial, electrical, communications debacle). My joyful re-entering into teaching was quickly doused with news that my sophomores and seniors delighted in driving new teachers out the door. My assignments involved using a computer, but no working computer was available (and of course, nothing worked at home). One student back-packed a $800 projector in one of the rooms I "carted" to each class. One teacher informed me that I had to be working on my work in the "closet" before classes instead of getting to know the students. My advising teacher left after school each afternoon to pick up her grandchildren. And, the beat goes on and on ... Then, in October, I informed the principal that I would not continue the year - not a career-defining moment. Since then I have been working with a Washington, DC consulting firm in their education department. I guess the questions remains to be answered. Do I return to teaching? And, if so, in what arena? Education today is not what it used to be, but the students need good teachers and I am a good teacher.
