PBS Teachers and Classroom 2.0 are hosting a free interactive webinar for educators on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010. Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. will discuss his most recent PBS project, "Faces of America." In making the film, Dr. Gates turned to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans and, in the process, discover what made America and what it means to be American. We will also be joined by a representative of the Educational and Community Outreach department at Thirteen who will provide an overview of the rich educational resources that have been created to help you use the film with elementary, middle and high school students.
Faces of America: Looking beyond the African-American experience to the wider immigrant story, Professor Gates unravels the American tapestry, following the threads of his guests' lives back to their earliest origins around the globe. Along the way, the many stories he uncovers — of displacement and homecoming, of material success and dispossession, of assimilation and discrimination — illuminate the American experience. Professor Gates' guests include professor and poet Elizabeth Alexander, who composed and read the poem at President Barack Obama's inauguration, chef Mario Batali, comedian Stephen Colbert, novelist Louise Erdrich, journalist Malcolm Gladwell, actress Eva Longoria, musician Yo-Yo Ma, director Mike Nichols, Her Majesty Queen Noor, television host/heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, actress Meryl Streep and figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.…

On Thursday, March 25 at 8 p.m. ET, we will host a webinar entitled "The Buddha: Teaching Mindfulness." During this event, filmmaker David Grubin will show clips from his new film, The Buddha, and talk about making the film and what he hopes audiences, particularly teachers and students, will take away from it. Mirabai Bush, Associate Director and Senior Fellow at The Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, will speak about using the film to teach about the Buddha's life and teachings and present research related to the effects of mindfulness on learning. Educator Peter Brown will share his experiences teaching about the Buddha in a Comparative Religion course, and Dr. Amy Saltzman will discuss methods for teaching mindfulness. Participants will also enjoy a tour of the companion website for the film, including an overview of educational resources.
About the Film:
Two and a half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This documentary by award-winning filmmaker David Grubin tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion. Richard Gere narrates.…

PBS Teachers and Classroom 2.0 are delighted to have education technology experts join us to present ideas for teaching with Ken Burns’s newest series, "The National Parks: America’s Best Idea." The film traces the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800s and follows its evolution for nearly 150 years. Using archival photographs, first-person accounts of historical characters, personal memories and analysis from more than 40 interviews, and stunning cinematography, the series chronicles the steady addition of new parks through the stories of the people who helped create them and save them from destruction.
