I am a technology professional in my mid 30's, living in Oregon. I have been working with databases for 20 years since my first job out of high school, with another 12 years of developing web-based applications I have developed a real passion for applications that run on the web or "in the clouds".
Web Application developed has captured my attention for the entire last decade. I evolved from developing applications using classic ASP, .NET, ColdFusion, and PHP to development using more portable JavaScript widgets and social applications. All my applications utilize a data back end, either from Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or some other data store such as GData or Amazon SimpleDB. I have also dabbled beyond JavaScript into using Adobe Air, Flex and Microsoft Silverlight, with an interest in pushing my understanding of Rich Internet Application (RIA) development.
Databases are the core of my professional existence, I love working with data. It has been that way my entire professional career, although I feel I have taken it down a different road than originally intended. Rather than being a tradition DBA I chose to embrace open data and cloud based data systems such as API's, SaaS, and Cloud File and Data Storage. This kind of storage and exchange of data I feel is the future of computing and applications.
Understanding the underlying infrastructure that my database driven web applications depend on is very important to me. I feel it has helped my development vision evolve from a traditional 3 tier development methodology to a more distributed approach using the cloud and many 3rd party web services available today. I am enjoying moving past a costly and limited server environment to unlimited cloud based instance environment, where I can deploy server instances that accomplish specific business goals with unlimited bandwidth, processing power, and storage.
Beyond web application development, online marketing first seemed relevant to me back in 1999 when I was trying to attract users to various sites, applications, and initiatives I was working on. The relationship between search engines, users, web site development, and content became a fascination of mine. Search engine optimization (SEO) and Search engine marketing (SEM) has been integrated with my web application design, development, deployment and operations ever since.
Studying user behavior has led me to Social Media Marketing (SMM) , Social Networking, and Social Media. How to reach and engage users has moved beyond traditional organic or paid search engine placement, it has gone social and turned into a living conversation. My quest to understand users has moved into social network, blogs, micro-blogs, video sharing, and many other current technologies that are part of the social media or web 2.0 evolution. Extending a web application or web site to social networks, other social media platforms, and on mobile platforms is just as or more important than being found on Google or other search engines.
In 2009 I am fortunate enough to be able to take my experience with web applications, databases, social networking, social media, business planning and marketing and apply it in the even management industry for WebEvents Global. As the VP of Technology for WebEvents Global I am overseeing the companies technology platform, and product development.
Moving WebEvents Global onto a scalable platform that utilizes the best of the cloud and 3rd party tools is my first priority. With a scalable platform to operate from I will work on developing many new social applications, web services, and next generation event management solutions. I am very excited of the opportunities in front of me with WebEvents Global.
I look forward to many new discussions, relationships, technologies and new directions in my career during 2009.
