I'm exploring the option of putting a version of linux on old laptops for a science class. Xubuntu should run better on the older (pentium III) machines, but edubuntu seems like a good one to try as well. This is my first time using linux so any suggestions are welcome. Also, if this ends up working out with the OS, should I use the linux apps or use openoffice?
I use Ubuntu on my laptop (which is essentially the same as Edubuntu) and have been trialling Xubuntu on an EeePC. You'll find Xubuntu is great for just running AbiWord, Firefox, etc (the packages that come with it). If you want to access the vast repositories, though, some of the apps can tax your system (as they'll require installing KDE or Gnome libraries) this includes OpenOffice. The *buntu series are definitely the most user-friendly and "out the box" ready distributions - made me a penguin convert for good!
