I decided to use ePals.com to either post looking for a band willing to participate in a cross-country or global concert.  By connecting with a performance ensemble with similar ability levels, we would coordinate to perform a concert via Skype (video conferencing website).  We would collaborate together to pick songs from each group's area.   The directors would arrange for students to create a presentation for the other group on the songs they've chosen (translation, origin, history, etc).   Rehearsals and performance would be done via Skype.  By doing this activity in my classroom, students will have access to music from across the world and with playing music, there is no translation needed. The notes you play in the States are the same notes you would play in Europe, Asia, etc.  Students will be able to share out to their counterparts a little about the region they are from in hopes that it would broaden their music appreciation.  This project would be a year-long activity and take a lot of planning but I believe the students would gain valuable insights on different cultures.

A global concert would be amazing!  What a really cool idea... I think students would really enjoy the opportunity to collaborate and learn from each other.  How would you choose what areas you decide to represent- would you use your students' interests in different countries or sort of have a play list from countries that you know have distinct music for the students to choose an ePal from?

I think it would depend on what group would want to participate through ePals.  For instance, if a group from Spain is interested and wants to participate then the idea would be to pick pieces from the US and Spain. In researching ePals, there wasn't anything posted about a cross global concert, but more of a composition project, which could also work too, but I thought I'd think outside of the box.
