The activity my students participated in is on ePals where a class in Brazil was seeking partners for an email exchange Project. The Brazilian class wanted to learn more about other cultures and  everyday life of students. Their primary focus was to communicate through email.
In order for my students to have structure to this lesson, they were required to send an email to a partner in Brazil that they were assigned to. The email had to have all necessary components: email address, subject line, cc the teacher, a descriptive body of text, a signature, and three attached digital photos.  The digital photos were to be taken at our school and had to include a picture of one enterprise area in our school, a product that area produced, and a picture of themselves.
Once the students received a response, they were also to respond to the email.
This lesson has a global awareness component as the class will be exposed to students in another country and have the opportunity to see how those students live in that culture. The class in Brazil also wants to share their daily lives.
In our classroom, email is very important. We communicate with our customers by email most often and send photos or attachments of our work. This lesson is a way for our class to prepare themselves to efficiently communicate with our customers via email. Not all of our students have an email account and one will be created for them.

Hi Patty! I think that this is a great idea for your students! I think that the assignment will challenge them but not overwhelm them. I also like that it prepares them for their future and allows them to practice sending professional emails.

Hello Patty!   I loved reading about how your students would correspond with those in Brazil through the email exchange project.  It is important for students to communicate with others especially through email.  I see the benefits that your students would acquire by participating with this activity.  It is also another added benefit for them to communicate with those from another country.  For students to learn how to effectively write an email,  using proper grammar, spelling and  how to cc the teacher as well as how to attach pictures.  What a great lesson!

Hi Patty,

The great thing about this lesson is that you could tweak it or modify it to fit almost any subject or topic that you wanted and there would still be collaborative learning going on! I loved being exposed to all of the resources that are available to us as educators that really encourage communication on a global level.

I created a lesson using Epals as well. My students really enjoy writing especially when it involves using technology. I really think that using this site to communicate with students their age from another country is amazing! My students very rarely get to experience speaking to students from different areas outside of where they live let alone another country, so I am really excited to see how they react when they begin communicating with students from other countries.

Love the idea of e-mail exchanges.  Pen pals have been replaced with the ease of e-mail and what a better way to excite the kids and teach them the value of writing then through an activity like the one you described.  Love the extension activities of having students describe their daily routines and the photos that will be attached.  Great lesson.
