Techonology in the classroom

Jennifer, This a great question! I find myself fluctuating between too much and either wanting or needing more. From Moodle to online video streams, slide presentation to personal response devices, backchannels and web tools ... I have been using "technology" for many years and still wonder when does it get in the way of the human interaction between teacher and student?

I was wonder. I know that students learn with technology but i feel as though they learn better with amore hands on approach.

Jennifer. That is totally the point. The teacher needs to decide what is useful and if technology contributes to improved learning. In our development of apps, we find that technology offers teachers opportunity to provide more individualized practice for certain students. There is no doubt that students love technology and if this gets kids to spend more time learning, then it is a good thing. Technology is just another delivery medium to be incorporated into teaching.

How do you decide what is appropriate for the classroom?

I think techonology is useful when it does more than what a student can do with just a pen and pencil. When a student blogs on information read from non-fiction and then a group of students use all the blogs to write a document together using google docs - more collaboration can take place. Compared to the old was with just a student doing reserach and turning in their own paper. I was always sad when I wrote a great paper and only a teacher read it. I think technology is part of the work environment today and we do a disservice if our students are not prepared to use it.

I agree technology is always a good thing in the classroom aslong as it is not overused.

That way it does seem that techonology is a good thing. But it seems that so many people today seem to over use it and forget that some students learn better with paper and pencil.

Technology for me can be over used quickly.
