Tough Decision--go for Bachelor's or Master's in Education?

Hi everyone,

I'm having a difficult time deciding whether I should receive a Bachelor's or a Master's in Education, in part because people are advising me both ways.  I have been told by many people that it's wiser to get a Bachelor's in my content area, pick up a second major or a few minors, and then get a Master's; that way, I have a fall-back option if I can't find a teaching job, or if I ultimately decide teaching isn't the right path.  The drawback is that some districts might be more reluctant to hire a candidate with a Master's because of the added expense.   At this point, I am 85% sure I want to teach.  I am, however, concerned about the job climate in my area (Philadelphia).  Many people with education degrees have been subbing for years without receiving a full-time position, which leads me to think it might be wise to try out other fields.  I have an interest in a wide variety of areas outside of education, and I don't like the prospect of pigeonholing myself.  Which do you think is the better decision? I guess what I ultimately want to know is, will receiving a Master's prevent me from landing my first job?
