Title of the Project: The Great Probability Challenge

Subject of the GLP:

- Mathematics: Applied Statistics and Probability

- Technology: Students use technology tools to explore statistics and probability principles in their daily lives and to communicate their findings with the world.

Structures:

- Pooled Data Analysis

- Information Exchange

- Electronic Publishing

Types of Participants:

The project is hosted by Mrs. Cupples’ Computer Class in Yucaipa, California.

Invited to participate are classrooms, grades 3-6 from all over the world.

Up to 10 global classrooms are invited to participate.

Time Frame: September 7th – October 31st 2010

Rationale:

- The project provides opportunities for students to learn different problem-solving

strategies.

-  The project provides opportunities for emotional, academic, and personal growth through direct experiences with other cultures.

Synopsis:

The Great Probability Challenge is a hands-on probability and statistics project that provides

opportunities for students to interact on a global level and to share project experiences. Students

perform a coin toss experiment and predict, analyze and present their experimental findings

through visual graphing representations. Experimental outcomes are contributed to a global

project database and students analyze data from the pooled data set.

Students chronicle and share their project experiences through the Probability Blog.

Students expand upon their understandings of statistics and probability concepts by authoring a

personal probability task and presenting their projects through the project blog. Students share their tasks with students from all over the world and expand their cultural horizons through applied learning experiences.
