The Devanagari script has evolved over a period of hundreds of years. Devanāgarī is part of the Brahmic family of scripts. The Constitution of India, adopted it in 1950, declares Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language. Devanagari, ‘script of the city of the gods’ is at times abbreviated as ‘Nargari’, ‘urbane’. This script has traditionally been used with the Prakrit and Sanskrit languages and among others, it is still used with Marathi and Nepali.The entire script is carefully, structured with each symbol representing a particular sound. Even the order of the symbols that make up the Devanagari alphabet is far from random. The symbols are arranged by the way in which they are spoken and the portion of the mouth that is used to speak them.
