What point is Hurston trying to make in her first paragraph?

I think that Hurtson is trying to say that by her being colored dosent make her diffrent from everyone else.They are all diffrent from the outside,but very alike from the inside.
In my opinion, Hurston is trying to point that what's in the past shouldn't matter anymore, because it's been sort of dealt with, and just because she's colored that doesn't limit her from whom she should or could be.
