I am conducting a research project on the effectiveness of the interactive whiteboard in the classroom. How do you think the interactive whiteboard enhances student instruction? If applicable, in what ways do you use the interactive whiteboard in your classroom? Do students and teachers benefit?

I think that interactive whiteboards greatly enhance student learning.  Using this tool in the classroom allows teachers to be able to engage the students directly in the lesson.  Teachers can use this for their entire lesson to show websites, pictures, put questions on it for students to respond to verbally and even by touch. This technology lets students learn in a hands-on way by providing a visual model for instruction.  The whiteboard can also be used for announcements, attendance, and even to introduce lesson themes.  In my opinion, students and teachers can both benefit from this tool because it opens up so many possibilities for learning.  Teachers can benefit from it because it's a time and energy saver while at the same time it is effective.  The students will be able to learn in a visual way, have fun with their learning, and constantly be intrigued.

I am still a student studying teacher education, so I can not contribute personally the effectiveness of interactive whiteboards. However, in my Educational Technology class we had a wonderful guest speaker last week that spoke on how she uses these technologies in her classroom. I learned so much! There are so many simple things that really enhance the classroom interaction and attention of students. One example, for younger students, a teach could do so much with name selection for popcorn reading and/or seating charts.

I think there are so many positive ways to use an interactive whiteboard in the classroom. It's something visually appealing for the students and it's something could that keep the students active in the lesson. The interactive whiteboard might be used for attendance, videos, matching games, vocabulary lessons, math problems, etc. Students love getting out of their seat and working or playing games on this equipment. It's also a great way for the students to learn together and teach each other. If one student doesn't know how to work out a problem, another might step up and show them how. I recently read a few negative posts about the interactive whiteboard. One of the arguments claimed that students in the classroom might raise their hands to go up and solve a math problem on the board, but when they get up there they don't actually know what they're doing, they just want to get out of their seat. I think that this could be positive though. Now the teacher knows that this student is struggling and can help the student, or call on another student to help out. In another situation the student might just sit at their desk quietly, never understanding the lesson. Another complaint was classroom management, all of the students want to participate and get out of their seats. I can see how this might be difficult and distracting. However, I think that in this case there are more positives than negatives. The teachers can have their entire lesson on the board at one time (a video, a website, a game) and the students get to learn in new exciting ways.
