Behavior and Classroom Management

Hi Guys!

I'm looking for ideas in my clinical classroom. My 1st grade students are driving me nuts. They do not listen, they are constantly making noise, not following directions,etc. My corresponding teacher says it has been like this all year and she does not know what else to do. She tried reward systems, if students didn't misbehave more than 5 times in a week they would get pizza for lunch on Friday. The first week only 10 of the 17 students got pizza. The second week only 7 of the 17 students got pizza. She has tried punishment also. If the students are not following directions, their "worm" on the chalkboard gets moved to the "warning" apple. If they continue misbehaving, their worm gets moved to the "no recess" apple. None of this is working. Students continue to stay in from recess day after day. Any suggestions? What else can we try with these students?!

Procedures, procedures, procedures! That is the name of the game of successful class management. Think of every little thing that the kids do that drive you "nuts" and create a clear procedure for it. Everything from lining up, raising your hand, going to the bathroom, waiting for help from a teacher. Teach each procedure before the students will need to use it. Make it fun by practicing a few times the "right" way and the "wrong" way. Have kids act it out in the class and the others tell if they are doing it the right or wrong way. Keep practicing and reinforcing the "right" way and you will see results.
