Addressing informal writing in online discussions

In an online forum I had my students reflect on a class question and then respond to their peers' reflections. It was a great way to have all students participate, but despite reminders to write formally students tended to using "texting" language.

How do you address the use of informal writing in online discussions? Is it an issue you address and if so, how?
