In case you haven’t noticed, the ISTE10 Newbie Project is very different than it was last year. Many of you were familiar with Richard Byrne’s blog FreeTech4Teachers so you already had a connection to him. So many people have inquired about what they can do to help Jason Schrage get off to a good start this year. While we monetary donations are essential to the success of the project, there are many other ways you can support him throughout the year. Besides, I want to give you a chance to get to know Jason before asking for contributions.

1. Subscribe to his blog and leave comments. Remember that he is a brand new blogger. All to often we read blogs, but we don’t take the time to comment. The best way to encourage a new blogger to keep blogging is to leave comments and encourage them to keep at it. (Don’t expect too many updates until September.)

2. Follow him and interact with him on Twitter.

3. Include him in your #FollowFriday and #TeacherTuesday updates.

4. Use his blog as a teaching tool this school year. The purpose of the Newbie project this year is to give teachers a good role model to follow.

5. Make a small monetary donation. The official fund raising will not begin until later in the year, but you can make a donation through PayPal at anytime. There is a button on both of our blogs where you can do that. (Look for the PayPal button on both of our blogs early next week)

6. Offer him advice and suggestions for improvement. He genuinely want to receive constructive criticism.

7. Add the official Newbie Supporter badge to your blog. (Look for it soon.)

8. Tell everyone you know about this project. It is a unique opportunity to follow an amazing educator who is about to embark on an amazing journey.

9. If you are fortunate enough to make it to ISTE10, make it a point to seek out Jason in Denver. My guess is he will probably frequent the Bloggers’ Cafe’. Afterall, he will be a seasoned veteran blogger by then!

Jason is the perfect choice for the ISTE10 Newbie Project.

I applaud Beth for her efforts in supporting teachers to make it to the ISTE conferences. Her model for PLN support and mentoring is wonderful.

Being new to twitter (2 months), and new to blogging, I understand the importance of having people support you in the process. Even something as little as a blog comment can make a big difference. Let's do what we can to support this year's newbie for the ISTE conference. Check out the link to Beth's great ideas on how to do that. We're all in this together!
Donelle,
Thank you for your support of this project! You are one amazing educator and friend! I cannot wait to continue learning with you this year. You are so full of energy.
Howdy Beth, Jason and everyone!

I am happy to support! Sorry it took so long, I think I saw your posting Beth a few days ago--was out of town.

This is just one more reason to be active with a PLN. It gives and you receive. You give and you share. You lurk, and you gain confidence. I Love this and am happy to support. I will send a pledge soon, and be looking for you, Jason on Twitter. I think I follow you already, but I will check.

Beth, as always, you deliver. You are amazing and I appreciate you for your ideals and perseverance. You are a great PLNer and I am so glad we are friends.

Hey--BTW, what is a #friday follow, and a #teacher tuesday?

See you soon all,
Nancy

Good morning Nancy! The Newbie Project for the 2009-2010 school year is just getting underway. We are working quite a bit right now on what he can do to give back to our PLN in exchange for support. I hope you will encourage your teachers to follow his journey this year. There are so many blogs out there, but I think his will be worth following. I will let Jason tell you more, but I know he is excited about sharing what he is doing while he continues to learn more everyday from his PLN.

The pledge button is operational now and you are welcome to make a donation at any time. I am working on getting a spreadsheet attached to it today. For others who want to wait and see if this is a project that they want to suppport that is fine too. The button will be up until we meet our goal.

The #fridayfollow and #teachertuesday hashtags are a way promote educators in your PLN. It is just another way to say "This is a great educator and you should follow them!" Needless to say it feels great when you get named, but I feel so bad when I am the one mentioning people because ALL of the people in my PLN are great! (That is why I follow them.)
