Think reflectively about the micro-teaching activity that you and your partner created and presented in class. Then, write a blog (300-350 words approx.) that responds to the following three key questions: why you found this activity interesting and strong for your class, what you would have done differently due to differentiating instruction reasons, and how you would have incorporated more culture into it.

In order to earn full credit for this blog, you must also leave at least two comments (100-150 words each) on your peers’ posts. Please take the time to read what they wrote – you’ll find that you often have similar reactions to the teaching experience, and can help one another a great deal through this first semester!

Hi Maria:

I liked the teaching lesson that both Maria and you presented to the class. Your approach was well performed since you made the students work in pairs. You also incorporated culture so you could strengthen your lesson. I liked the way how you interacted with the students by asking them how their weather was in their respective communities and the types of seasons there are. You were constantly keeping up the communication between the teachers and the students and among themselves. The only flaw was that you forgot to mention that the approach you were using was the communicative one. Other than that, you did a great job guys. Congratulations.

Thank you!

After reviewing our group’s presentation, I believe Oscar and I were successful in communicating our objective and execute our lesson plan in the interest approach to the Spanish Level 3 students. Whose purpose was to educate the classroom in celebrating the Hispanic heritage which occurs throughout the month of September. While continuing to effectively draw on the students' ties and their important contribution to our culture and society here on Staten Island.   Our lesson plan was to capture the students' interest, on a topic that they could easily relate to. We used several methods in relating to the student’s interests. First, we peeked the student attention by asking them questions regarding their knowledge of Mexican culture and music here on Staten Island. We were then able to open a dialog between the students which was relatable to their own experience. In addition, we focused on the practice section of the lesson discussing the usage of verbs, giving examples of the use of past and present tense of those words. One example was using the word bailar, which mean to dance. Following the introduction, we were able to use the past tense to dance by using the verb "han bailado.” As dancing is an important part of the Mexican culture we felt that using this process was meant to tie this event into the practice phase of our lesson. We use these special phrases which kept the class engaged but continue onto the production portion of the lesson by using our time to teach important grammatical phrases that were of cultural importance. Using the interest base method, we were able to keep the students engaged while keeping them focused on our presentation. The final phase was utilizing the applicable tools along with an oral presentation to clearly communicate our learning objective. There were some miscues, but I believe we were able to recover and focus on the core lesson objective which was utilizing the interest approach to produce an effective lesson plan.

Hello Gloria, in my personal opinion I believe both you and Oscar did an awesome job with your teaching slice. Both you and Oscar where able to catch your students attention and interest by connecting your teaching slice to our Staten Island community. In specific when you two asked question regarding the Mexican community it helped many of your students relate since Mexicans play such a huge role in the population of Staten Island today.  It also helped your student stay engage and remain focused. I believe you guys had interest, you guys really got my attention especially since I recognized the neighborhood you presented. Regardless of the technical difficulties, that anyone can have, it was very well taught. I believe your teaching slice went good. (126)

Hi Briana,

I clearly believe that you and Xochitl did great with your teaching slide. Both you were able to clearly relate the lesson plan to current events and keep the class engaged.  The slides and videos were the highlights of the presentation, as I was clearly able to follow the topic that was being presented. You guys clearly hit the big "Cs", which was culture and communication.  I would have to say that your teaching style was on point. Great job.

The topic of the mini lesson was based on “The Season”, “Las estaciones del año” from the United States to different Latin América’s countries. The activity implemented in class was interesting and strong because the content was based on the Standers for Foreign Language Learning. It helped to communicate the concepts of the topic better. Also, the implementation of the 5Cs (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) contributed to promote in building communicative proficiency and cultural awareness.
The class started by watching a video clip about the weather of some of Latin América’s countries in the target language (TL). Through the video clip, students had the opportunity to visualize the different weathers in diverse regions, such as México, Central América, and South América. Also, students learned to differentiate and compare the weather in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Students were exposed to pictures of different seasons in different countries in the target language (TL). Throughout the visualization of the pictures, students had the opportunity to connect their background knowledge and had a better understanding of the new knowledge of the TL.
Focus activity, students had the opportunity to engage in a cooperative learning activity, in which they worked in pairs and help each other to identify and match the correct words from reading materials related to the topic. Through the activity students were able to activate their background knowledge and acquire new knowledge from the reading materials. Also, this activity helped in differentiated the students’ learning needs as well as the acquisition of new knowledge of the TL.
Finally, the objective of the lesson was successful because the content and the material were at the students’ level and interest. Students were able to engage in the activity and participate during open end conversation. A few things that could be differentiated into the lesson is the incorporation of natural sounds of the weather and mini videos of different countries’ weather to make it more realistic.

Hello Maria,

Overall the presentation was excellent. The primary goal of the lesson was very noticeable as every other micro teaching slide that was presented to the class. It is important to never forget to utilize the five C’s, something that educators should remember is that is that allowing students to work with a partner is an excellent way for them to feel connected with their peers. You and Mariella had made students feel comfortable when they had the opportunity to choose their partner, as we know some of them feel better when working with a friend. Not only that, but the video that was provided was interesting to watch, one should be careful because there might be times when the video is too fast, and some students will not understand it the first time, it is best to play it twice in order for them to have a better understanding.

Hi Maria,

You and Mary did an excellent job. Both of you created a great teaching slide. I like the weather activity that you guys did. Your lesson plan was based around the weather, which you were able to phrase into questions to the class. You guys clearly promoted group participation. In my opinion, you reached your goal which is communication. Overall, the lesson went well.

Our micro-teaching activity from this week was based on differentiated by readiness. My partner Xochitl and I, designed our lesson for a level three Spanish class. Although we had a hard time choosing a topic we were able to come up with a topic. We felt our activity to be interesting for our student since our students would be able to relate to it and actually be interested in learning about current events that are happening in our world. Our students seemed very interested and entertained with the topic we chose. The two approaches we took while planning our lesson was simple to complex and dependent to independent. We first focused on simple to complex, We did this by giving our students the big picture of our lesson and then went into detail with the topic. Our lesson was very straightforward and clear in my opinion. I personally believe it was strong and level appropriate for our students which help them remain entertained. Our students were involved and focused throughout the whole for the most part. Secondly, we tried to incorporate the dependent to independent approach during the second activity. The second activity consisted in a second video showing Ricky Martin performing. After the video our students would be given a set a question where they would be ask to answer the questions individually to see what they understood from the video. For our final activity we were planning on asking our students to share with their classmates an experience from any previous concert they have previously attended. Here students would be able to express themselves freely with no specific guidance or guideline. For our next teaching slice we can try to incorporate more grammar or simply find a new way to better our approach when teaching differentiated by readiness. (300)

When one presents their lesson plan, one must make sure that they have successfully achieved all of their goals. The main idea of the micro-teaching was to represent the idea based on learning profile. As one is more exposed to the classroom, one realizes that there are many students whom learning techniques vary. Tomlinson (2001) states that “the goals of learning-profile differentiation are to help individual learners understand modes of learning that work best for them, and to offer those options so that each learner finds a good learning fit in the classroom.” In other words, one must be able to have a universal lesson plan to make sure everyone in the classroom is included.

As a second language educator, one must remember The Standards for Foreign Language Learning (SFLL), which indicate that making connections with the students is important; as well as making the lesson plan cultural and communicative. The lesson that was present was significant for the students because they learned about Hispanic Heritage Month, a cultural event that was happening during the time that the lesson was taught. Not only did one introduce a cultural event, but the students were able to see different professions in the Target Language (TL) while watching a video, listening to the video, as well as reading along with the video. With these tools’ students were able to understand the content that one had planned to teach them.

Something different that could have been done due to differentiating instruction reasons will be making sure that the questions that students receive are more specific and not very broad, especially when teaching a lower level class. Another thing that could have been done differently is making sure that one uses cognates for the students to understand the content a little better.  Culture could have been more incorporated into this lesson by making more personal, as by adding more information based on the student’s community. It is essential to make these connections so that one could never lose the students interests.

Hello Margarita, Your presentation was very well presented. You and David did a great job in presenting your thesis. The part where you guys talked about considering the five senses was smart because some students are visual learners while others prefer reading. Your presentation was culturally presentable. It was smart to use hispanic heritage month. Your right about using personal information of hispanic students in the class for a better aim towards culture. Your questions were very good in my opinion because they were not difficult, especially in the end were used asked broad question really helped the student know what was taught to them. Overall you and David did a fascinating job. (113)
